You need to make a decision as to where you want to spend time away from Whiteface. Lake Placid is a great town but it is 9 miles from Whiteface. There isn't much in between regarding connected development. Several independent lodges and motor inns. Most people stay in Lake Placid and I would suggest looking at the TownHouse Lodge. It was clean and inexpensive. There are also deals provided for discounted lift tickets. Most lodging is within walking distance to Main Street. Parking in Lake Placid is tight. A great web site is www.lakeplacid.com

There is a little mom & pop motel in Wilmington (just up the road from Whiteface) that I stayed at about 10 years back for a hockey tournament we were going to in LP. It was cheap and clean. I wish I could remember what it's called, but it's right in town and at the intersection with the road that goes up to North Pole. Any locals know the name of the place?
If you want some apres ski action thuogh, definately stay in LP. Wilmington is quite sleepy.

check the town of Jay. Its cheaper, closer and the roads are less treacherous. the disadvantage is that you are fairly far from the town of lake placid.

We've stayed at the Alpine Air Motel the last few times there and it's worked out pretty well. Maybe about a mile outside LP toward Saranac. Cheap and clean!!

If going sun-thursday and non-holiday go to lake placid.com and find one of the deals. The hilton has like 60 dollar a person per night deals that include lift tickets to whiteface and breakfast. There is a shuttle that runs but it's slow. If you are driving up just drive over to the mountain - its a pretty drive and takes like 15 minutes.
And trust me- don't miss out on the town of lake placid experience to save a few dollars. It's a picture perfect mountain town that has way too much going on for a tourist to make up for saving a few dollars.

Cobble Mountain Lodge just outside of Lake Placid on the way to Whiteface is 55 bucks a night. Clean and about as close to the mountain as you can get while still being relatively near LP.

Good point and can't stress that enough. Do not miss out on the town itself. Catch it while it's snowing and you'll be wondering why you don't live there.

Just keep an eye out for the sidewalk-plow!!

yes...that sidewalk plow is great- fun as hell to watch people dive out of the way.

Now if it were to just snow enough to really require the use of that sidewalk plow.

Several of the hotels near the intersection in Wilmington have either closed or change downers in the last several years. The last time I was through there, one place, I think at the NW corner of the intersection, looked to be vacant, weeds growing in the pool area and etc.

Maybe some locals will know more.
