Now that my dad has broadband cable, I'll be able to do that. It's a PITA unplugging the computer and everything to bring it over there, but worth it for the security.dmc said:smitty77 said:That's all fine and dandy when you're not downloading a weekly security update over 28.8.
I invite my friends on dialup over to my house to update their computers using my LAN. They bring a few beers.. And I fix them all up...
Maybe you can find someone that has broadband and just do all your maintenance in one shot...
BTW, I gave the old computer the final death-blow last night. My brother-in-law gave me an old Dell system to use while I searched and saved for a new system. The speed is comparable to what I had, it just needed a hard drive, which is about the only thing left working in the old system.
So I swap my HD and cd burner into the Dell system, and set everything up. Along the way, I need a few drivers off a missing Dell Resource CD. Thinking the missing disk is still in the cd-drive that came out of the Dell, I plugged the drive into the old system, hoping the semi-blown power supply can kick the cd-drive hard enough to open the tray.
I plug the pc into the wall, hit the power switch and POP! There is a small flash of light, some crackling, and an odor of fried electronics in the air. in a few second, I see small whisps of "secret smoke" coming from somewhere on the motherboard. I quickly unplug the old system before I launch anything else and start a fire. Down for good, she is. I was hoping to salvage a memory chip or two, but my guess is they are now junk. Rest in peace...
