That's all fine and dandy when you're not downloading a weekly security update over 28.8.

I invite my friends on dialup over to my house to update their computers using my LAN. They bring a few beers.. And I fix them all up...

Maybe you can find someone that has broadband and just do all your maintenance in one shot...
Now that my dad has broadband cable, I'll be able to do that. It's a PITA unplugging the computer and everything to bring it over there, but worth it for the security.

BTW, I gave the old computer the final death-blow last night. My brother-in-law gave me an old Dell system to use while I searched and saved for a new system. The speed is comparable to what I had, it just needed a hard drive, which is about the only thing left working in the old system.
So I swap my HD and cd burner into the Dell system, and set everything up. Along the way, I need a few drivers off a missing Dell Resource CD. Thinking the missing disk is still in the cd-drive that came out of the Dell, I plugged the drive into the old system, hoping the semi-blown power supply can kick the cd-drive hard enough to open the tray.
I plug the pc into the wall, hit the power switch and POP! There is a small flash of light, some crackling, and an odor of fried electronics in the air. in a few second, I see small whisps of "secret smoke" coming from somewhere on the motherboard. I quickly unplug the old system before I launch anything else and start a fire. Down for good, she is. I was hoping to salvage a memory chip or two, but my guess is they are now junk. Rest in peace...

I've been using Mac's since 1987...for the home it's been nothing but Mac's, all our internet/email stuff and we use quicken for our finances at home...

Because of the engineering CAD program(s) I work with are WINTEL platform, at the office I use both platforms, with 99% of my work completed on my Mac...

I find any problems I have are software based (microsoft  ) and Norton/Symantec cures all...

What Greg said, nearly verbatim. The Mac will run you more than the $700, though, most liekly.

I am a big Mac fan. First off Tiger is a great OS. It's stable as all hell and I learn something new every day. (Here's one I learned today, Tiger Users: Put your cursor over any word on a page in Safari, and Hit Ctrl+Apple+D)
As a teacher with tons of notes on my powerbook, I use spotlight everyday to quickly find what documents I'm looking for.

I think their hardware is well built .... and could someone name a PC company that has a "Genious Bar" in their retail stores?

...

Agreed Beano... Jobs & Co. always seem to come out with pretty intuitive things....too bad the SW apps crew didn't keep up and the OS was to be kept to themselves...during the 80s-90s :-? ...who knows how much earlier the video/audio revolution would have happenned... :-?

thanks for the offer, but I'm just looking/dreaming right now. Still trying to recover the checking account from the oil pre-pay from a month ago. Will probably be shopping around x-mas time (maybe get a holiday deal???).
