Hi all, first post here. I've got a long-planned trip to Smuggler's Notch starting this coming Saturday, through Tuesday. So, main skiing days will be Sunday and Monday. This is the first time I've skied in 5+ years, and we're taking our 4 year old for the first time. I'm dying with the weather this week, and getting very nervous about whether the trip will be a complete bust. Does anyone have any thoughts on whether Smuggs is likely to be mess in this timeframe? I've heard that it is not a great place to go when conditions are poor. Thanks in advance for any advice.

cant comment on smuggs. But if you've already got the trip planned, I say go and make the best of it. At least you'll get the QT with the fam.

How about ballroom dancing lessons? (sorry, I had to be a smart*...)

Anyways, are you committed on your tickets? My take would be to see who recovers best: smuggs, stowe or jay and then take your skis and your money there. If you are flexible, you could bail and go to another area and just stay at smuggs. I know it's a hassle and you lose a lot of the benis of smuggs daycare, etc. Maybe try smuggs day 1 and then bail if it's not working out. Just trying to make lemonade.

Go, make the best of it. There saying they have 34 trails open( not as good as a week ago, but still not too bad). Web cam of lower Rum Runner looks good, and there calling for a chance of snow every day starting tommorow.

Just go. Have fun. Enjoy the vacation. Your 4 year old won't know the difference.

Can't comment on conditions, but I know Smuggs has a REALLY good cancellation plan if you're staying up there

^^^ What he said ^^^

Your 4 year old will be psyched to just spend some time with you. Also, if you haven't skied in 5 years, you probably will just be easing back into. Have fun and please post a trip report. Oh.....and welcome to AZ!

At the moment, I'm planning to sit this weekend out. I've skied every weekend since the first weekend of November. It gives me a chance to touch base with people I usually don't see until the snow melts. I also have a substantial amount of chores I've been putting off until May that I can start getting to.

Not really sure how this helps the OP, but knock yourself out...

Go and have fun..if you don't spend much time on the slopes it's good family time and you'll have a chance to explore the area in VT

OK. Then my advice:

This weekend, if you're on the ledge, I think you should jump and end it all. ;)

I see no point in bothering this weekend. It's gonna be friggin' awful compared to the last two months.

We're skiing next week. Don't know what it is about us but our ski weeks always seem to coincide with warm spells. Guess we need to quit. I think the snowmaking trails and groomers will likely be fine by Sunday. The natural snow trails, trees, etc. got hurt. I know that Stowe had almost every black trail closed as of this morning, but they had almost all their blue and green terrain open. Places will blow snow, and perhpas pick up a few inchs of natural, and the groomers can work their magic in a few days. Go and have fun. Last year there was a downpour the day we drove up for our ski week. Conditions were MUCH more dire than now. We still had a great ski week.

That's my point. The OP hasn't been out in 5 years so they don't have the past two months to compare it to...

Took the family to smuggs for a week in April in 1999

We got thwere on Saturday and it rained from Saturday until Thursday

The middle child got the flu and was down all week, so the wife stayed with her

I took the kids to every factory in Northern Vermont all week, then to the fun zone

Except for my poor daughter, it was GREAT

This was at a point where none of the kids skiied yet

Went there the next 4 years in a row and had mid winter conditions

The kids can now ski just about anything

Well worth the effort

GO!

My wife's work schedule basically limits us to going sometime in the first three weeks of January and then again for a week in later March. She simply can't get away from work at other times.
