It is, dmc, it is, but I can't go yet. Not until this weekend, anyway. The way the weather's looking though, there may not be anywhere with any snow left by then. Gotta stay near Boston for the time being, day trips only. Sadly.

[quote="ctenidaeThat's only necessary if, after a "white room" you do some "bark eating".

Unlike corn snow and white rooms, bark eating is not enjoyable. Take my word for it.[/quote]

I'll add: "Tree Brake"

(Emergency use only - not for high speed use)

300th Post!!!!! 8) :p

Man, oh man, do I spend too much time thinking of the mtns.

I believe that "Death Cookies" refers to those chunks of snow/ice that form after freeze-thaw cycles. They can be as large as small stones and are not that fun to ski on. :-? You've probably come across them before (as I have) but did not realize it. They also form on the sides of trails that have just had snowmaking done.

Aren't Death Cookies the leftover chunks that the groomers create after they bust up some crusty snow and ice? Not fun at all......

Yup, those are death cookies.

Another typically New England condition is "Dust on Crust" or a very light layer of fresh snow over hardpack (ie, ice) which makes conditions very difficult to read and adjust to.

Other New England conditions:

Frozen Granular = Ice
Loose Granular = Wet ice
Packed Powder = Almost ice

Randonee is French for "Can't telemark"
Telemark is Norwegien for "Wait for me at the bottom"

How about "Yurt"?
Is it A) a generic term for whatever lodging you're using, coming from 2) a back-country shelter, or third, a I-want-to-sound-cool-so-I-use-terms-incorrectly type word?

Yurt describes a particular style of large, semi-perminent, tent structure based on a design used in Mongolia. They have been used by a few ski areas (cross country and backcountry, mainly) as warming huts or overnight destinations.

Click here for some info on yurts in northern NH.

First trip to NM a few years back and a Lifty at Angel Fire greets us first run and says: "Be careful: It's a little icy"

I reply: "Son, we come from the Northeast where the Natives have 27 words for "Ice". We call this "Packed Powder"

Bump - !!

OK - this old thread has it all - the arrival of ctenidae, the definition of his online name, funny bits, and TrailBoss at 300 posts total. Whew - has it really been that long?

What other weird ski terms do you need defined?

Wow, TB's 300th post was 6000 posts ago. Lends truth to the second line in that post.

Is there a word that means "Please, dear God, let it hurry up and be winter time because I'm sick of heat and would really like to go skiing"? Or is the term just "Tuesday"?
