I was reading a post last week of someones and there were some great discussions and suggestions of places to go in/around Bethel, Sunday River. I have been searching for it and cant find the post. So if someone knows of this post or wants to give their suggestions of places to eat and neat apres ski places, (we are going this Wed thru Fri 12/19 to 12/21).
There are 4 of us, mid to late 20's and we are staying at a B&B in the center of Bethel (is there anywhere good within walking distance to the center) or are all the good places near the mountain? I have been up there a few times but usually stay on mountain...

Thanks!!

I didn’t know night life and Sunday River could go together in the same sentence. Love the mountain but the night life was non-existent. I will watch this thread as I am interested myself. I use to spend a lot of time at the river until 2 years ago so maybe something has changed.

If you are staying intown Bethel, you'll be able to walk between the Bethel Inn ( downstairs lounge), the Sudbury Inn ( downstairs) and the Funky Red Barn ..... easy walking distance from anywhere in the Bethel town T.

If you want to get to Rooster Brothers, the Jolly Drayman, the Brew Pub, Liams, the Matterhorn, or anywhere ON Mountain like Phoenix or Gringo Harry's, ask anywhere on the main drag in Bethel about the Mountain Explorer bus service. Trust me, ( I'm local) if you want to pub crawl, use the Mountain Explorer. Give up a little to the inconvenience. Bethel PD would love to give you a blue light special.

I second the Mountain Explorer suggestion. It's convenient as public transportation goes, and it's free.

The Brewery is junk...IMO the food's gone waay downhill in the past year or so and as for nightlife, I haven't seen anything worth mentioning going on there yet this year. Can't beat their $1.50 SRBC Drafts on Weds. nites though.

Personally I'm at Suds just about every night, definitely check out hoot night on Thursdays. If I'm not there, it's the Phoenix. And if I really wanna get shithoused I'll hit the funky red barn.

Apres I gotta go with the Goggle, but the shipyard isn't too bad either. It's all personal preference.

I'll third the Mountain Explorer, although it doesn't run midweek till the 21st.

A good bet is to ski, start at the Goggle, head over to the Phoenix for a bit, maybe check out the Matterhorn and then head in town to Suds or the Barn depending on your mood. Once you find a place with a vibe you like, just stick there till you get sick of the scene.

Be honest though, the whole scene has been pretty weak for the most part thus far, so the only night anything should be going on when you're there is gonna be Hoot Night on Thursday @ Sud's Pub below the Sudbury Inn....and even that's not a definite cuz last week was pretty weak.

Things'll pick up after X-mas though.

Just make sure you stop in the Jolly Drayman @ the Briar Lea for some food and a Blithering Idiot.

Fourth the mountain explorer.

Bethel police=Witchhunt, don't risk it.
I wouldn't even 420 and drive in that town.

They can't mountain explorer it though, as the days they'll be up the bus isn't running yet, except on Saturdays and Sundays.

take a cab as an alternative?

sounds funny, but Bethel isn't too different from Stowe in size and Stowe always had Pegs Pick Up, which for the mountains even during the off season was good cab service.

Kowloon Village does a half price polynesian drink night/cheap beer night on Thursday too so you could always start there, it's easy walking distance from anywhere in in town Bethel, then head a few doors up the street to Sud's.

Ehh the only one around is Stagecoach and they charge like $20 to get to the mountain each way. Although if there's 3-4 people that's for sure an option. Good call.

Heres a link for em.

What is up with resort town cops being total clowns?

I live in a semi resort (beach) town, and the local cops are absolutely freaking brutal.

northern new england townie cops seem to dial the dickhead factor up several notches, though.

Well lets see start at barker near the end of the day. I usually hit the Matterhorn for apres ski music. Sometimes come back a little later. the pizza is freekin awesome.

I always have liked Suds. If your want high end mex food Gringo Harry's is a nice place I heard.

Take the explorer or mountain shutte depending on where you are. You can go to the ship yard brew house at White capt lodge as well. This Sat there is a big park event at night at south ridge. I assume the goggle will be going Walk across the St to the Phoenix for easy bar hopping..

May not be the access road at K, but we find time to have fun and keep our driving privilidge. Use the explorer.

I'd like to point out that I've never actually EATEN @ the brewery. Just drinks.

Anyway, it seems that whenever a townie gets a chance to bust an outta state tourist, they do. I wouldn't say this is just in Northern NE, but EVERYWHERE. You must prepare for the elements.

Hey Sneak, where in SK? Nice to see another RHODY here.

Thanks for the suggestions!! Yeah I wouldnt risk the driving of course, but thanks for the heads up. Thats why I was looking for sume suggestions that were close by and others that werent. We're not looking for too much, just a little atmosphere and something to do after skiing, and some good beers :).

Thanks again. I am super excited as the conditions are looking fabulous!! Just got to get through the rest of today, then its vaca time!!

In my mind, northern New England
Pizzas at the Matterhorn are great and so is the rib eye. Great atmosphere too. Lots of SR regulars.

The beers at Sunday River Brewery are good. I like the IPA. The barbecues are on the sweet and sticky side of things. Burgers are OK. I make a better chicken fried steak.

Best barbecue in Bethel is still Barbecue Bob's trailer near the Good Food store. Nowhere to sit in the winter. Just buy the meat and eat it in your car or room. Sausages and pulled pork are key. Barbecued leg of lamb at Easter is the best. Take it "mild" and "wild."

Make hoot night which is Thus night at Suds. Probably the most active the town will be midweek. Plus you can walk and use the explorer Friday.

Eh, the Bethel police aren't all that picky. They'll bust locals, too. I probably can dig up my written warning for a plate light out if you really want to see it, and I know plenty of other people who have been ticketed for various violations while living in the area. I will say that it's a rather well-staffed department given the size of the town.

As far as nightlife goes, I'd be inclined to go with Suds or the FRB, depending on how much local color you're looking for (the FRB wins that contest hands down and can sometimes get quite interesting). Neither will really get going until normal bar hours, so hit some of the other places for apres (or take a nap so you'll be recharged for the evening's festivities).
