It looks like Pedro is out for the playoffs...how much will this affect the Mets chances? As a pitching staff I think the Mets have been so-so the entire season so I don't think it will mean much.

I tend to agree with you...I think the early clinching of their division, home field, etc. will be more of an issue as they lost 7 of 9 before winning big last night. The Mets should win the NL pennant.

Does anyone remember the beginning of the season when everyone was saying the Yankees had problems with their pitching staff? The season is almost over and I think they have one of the best staffs in baseball. A legit Cy Young candidate (Wang), one 17 game winner (Johnson) and another 15 game winner (Mussina), plus the best closer in baseball (Rivera).

What other pitching staff comes close?

I'll give you wang, but johnson is sporting an era of 5.00 and Mussina has been both hurt and very inconsistent since the middle of june. He was 13-3 at the end of july and here he sits at 14-7. I'll take both oakland and detroits staff over new yorks. and in a short series with the twins, you better not go 5 games with santana lurking. but the yankees offense is downright scary with all these guys back. I think it was tuesday night i was watching a bit and sterling (or whoever does the tv) said there were 44 all star games and 42 postseasons combined in the lineup.

Oakland has a history of folding up shop in the playoffs...I'd rather the Yankees play them in the first round than any other team.

Detroit? They somehow made it through the regular season without falling apart. They have a great manager (Leyland) and he worries me more than any of their players. Their pitching staff is totally untested in the playoffs...Yanks will beat them.

Minnesota scares me, but not because of Santana...he and Wang are a wash and the rest of the Yankees pitching staff is better and more experienced. The Twins are one of those teams that do all the little annoying things that win games though. Very pesty. Good defense and baserunning. Good situational hitters. They could be the Yanks Waterloo.

Yanks will get either Detroit or Twinkies (same for Oakland). If Liriano was healthy I'd say the Twinkies are easily the best staff. All season long I didn't think Detroit was for real. Not so sure now. I hope it's A's/Tigers, Yanks/Twins.

Santana/Wang a wash? You're nuts.

Santana is the second best pitcher in the AL, behind Ray Halladay when he's healthy. Wang is a good kid, but not yet at Santana's level.

1st round: Twinkies over Yanks; Tigers over A's. Mets lose to Padres; Phillies beat Cards.

2nd Round: Tigers over Twins; Phillies over Padres.

Series: Tigers beat Phillies in 6, just to drive every sports fan in Philly insane.....sorry.....:dunce:

But Liriano isn't healthy...so the Twins don't have the best staff.

Why do you think Santana is so much better than Wang? They both have the same number of wins. They're both the No. 1 starter for their team. What is Santana's playoff experience/record? I don't recall him being in any World Series games either, so he has no playoff experience edge over Wang.

I think it's wishful thinking on your part because you want the Twins to win so the A's don't have to play the Yanks (assuming your an A's fan from your avatar).

You have good reason to think that way; you had better hope the A's get past the first round..

I'd put my $$ on Detroit winning the series before the Phils even making the postseason. The wild card will be LA.

Or SD...LA has been playing very well since they got Greg Maddux and will be the Mets' toughest out in the playoffs.

AL Cy Young: Johan Santana, SP, Minnesota Twins
What I don't understand about preseason picks is why anyone would pick against Santana. He is clearly the best pitcher in baseball. There is no need to rattle off his second-half numbers over the last three years, because at this point they've been talked about so much people believe they're real, even though they don't look it. Instead, here are four others: 233 2/3, 245, 19 and 2.77. Those are Santana's innings pitched, strikeouts, victories and earned-run average, and if he finishes the season leading the league in all four – which he currently does – he'll become the AL's first pitcher since Hal Newhouser in 1945 to win pitching's equivalent of the quadruple crown.
1) Santana
2) Roy Halladay
3) Joe Nathan
Wang probably should be at least mentioned in the discussion for CY Young but give me Santana any day.

Baseball history is full of Cy Young winners who didn't win the series the year they won the award. This is someone's opinion, and they have not awarded the trophy yet. But let Johan have his Cy Young. He probably deserves it, I won't contest that nor do I even care. In my book, The Yanks are nowhere without Wang and in that light he is equally deserving.

I care about who is going to win the matchup between the Yanks and the Twins. Johan is going to have to put his nice trophy down and pitch to the best lineup in baseball. I wish him well.

wow, i almost forgot this was originally about the mets and pedro. My .02 cents. Mets have a fearsome lineup also but I'd be a little nervous banking on Steve Trachsel, El Duque and Tom Glavine. actually with El Duques postseason success, he may be the most trustworthy at this point.
