You sure that was Gunstock? I had always been told that the "Golden Pond" was the lake adjacent to what is now Shawnee Peak.

The real Golden pond is Great Pond in Belgrade Maine. The movie was filmed mainly in NH.

100% sure that the scene where the kid was driving around in the boat basically doing doughnuts. That was shot in Eastern end of Lake Winnipesaukee basically in the part of the lake bordered by Wolfeboro Bay to the North, Alton bay to the South, Rattlesnake Island to the West and the Barndoor Islands to the East.

Gunstock and even then a still operating Alpine Ridge is at the 53 second mark of this clip in the upper left corner as the boat is passing the small island.

- My grandparents had a place on Winnipesaukee in that basic area for 30+ years and as a kid growing up I spent many hours boating in and around that area

On Golden Pond was shot in 1981 @ NH's Squam Lake, in Holderness. Not sure exactly sure which Mt is in a few background shots....

Shawnees Peak in Bridgton ME over looks Long Lake, which runs the 12 miles N/S from Naples to Harrison. You can also see Highland Lake from parts of Shawnee

It over looks Moose Pond. Long lake is on the other side of Bridgeton.

They had to use Winnipesaukee for a couple of scenes where they needed "larger" body of water shots though. About 95-98% of the water shots were Squam though.

Hmmm.... I must be really confused..?? We've had a house there for 40+ years, and can see both our boat and our house from the Mt.

True there are many lakes/ponds there (crystal, Highland, Moose) but Long Lake is the biggest one visible from Shawnee which is right on 117 on the western shoes of Long Lake.

I'm sitting on my deck looking at both the lake + the Mt as I'm writing this. If we go for a hike later today, I'll post a photo.

I guess so. Their address from their website: 119 Mountain Road, Bridgton, ME 207-647-8444

Directions from Portland:
Less than One Hour - US Route 302 West for 50 miles. Turn left on to Mountain Road approximately 6 miles past Bridgton (second left after Moose Pond.)

And google.maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=....056752,-70.741997&spn=0.127559,0.265045&z=12

You can probably see the mtn from Long, but it actually sits right on Moose.

I also know the boys summer camp Winona and girls Wyonegonic are on Moose Pond.

On Golden Pond was set in Maine and the location of the pond that inspired the novel is in Maine, but the film "pond" sequence were filmed near Plymouth, NH. There may have been a shot of Tenney or whatever it was called at the time, but I don't recall the movie all that well.

"On Golden Pond" the movie screenplay was adapted from a play by Ernest Thompson who was born in Bellows Falls Vermont and owns the playhouse in Kittery Maine (SOURCE). As he was from Vermont it seems likely he was inspired by some pond in New England when he wrote it but I can't find any source to support any specific pond as the source.

Its already been stated but many scenes of the movie On Golden Pond were filmed on Squam Lake in Holderness NH, not all but Squam and Holderness most famously lay claim to the movie. Personally I can only pick out the ledges of Rattlesnake Mountain in the water scenes. Plymouth is nearby, about seven miles from the channel between Little and Big Squam to the nearest Plymouth town line, but Tenney was most likely not in any of the scenes. I remember when this movie was released. It was a very big deal that it was filmed in New Hampshire especially when it became successful and Henry Fonda won the academy award. While a PSC student I lived in Holderness accross the street from the marina where some sceen were filmed. The dock and gas pumps still look much like they did in the film.

I realize we're still trying to connect Gunstock to this film but don't you think we've gotten off topic?

Thanks for the research! Its clear Squam and Great Pond have a lot in common. When I was living in Holderness in the early 90's there was still mail boat service on Squam. I'm not sure about today.

I grew up in the area and spent almost every summer on Great Pond when I was a kid, so I knew the connection. I just had to find it. It's kinda funny to see mailboxes at the end of docks. They offer rides too so it's a great way to see the whole lake if you're every up in Belgrade.

Here's a pic I took about a year ago of Shawnee and Moose Pond. In the 4 winters I spent 2 nights a week at Shawnee I always admired the beautiful scene with the mountain all lit up with a reflection on Moose Pond you got before the pond froze over. Unfortunately, since I was always on a school bus I never got it.

Long Lake is awesome, if I could afford a nice summer place on a lake it would be in Harrison on Long Lake.

Since Long Lake is a good 10 miles or more from Shawnee if you can see your boat from the mountain it must be one big boat.

Nice pic! Is it possible that there's a different Shawnee peak on or near Long? Since the ski area really is/was Pleasant Mtn?
