Hahaha, it's funny I give K-mart a lot of crap, but in reality I like it, it's a short drive away from where I live. However there "bigger" "more" mantra makes it easy to pick on them. Especially when their vertical is laughable, there snow tally's are pretty amusing from time to time, they are not the largest mountain in the east, etc, etc!

The one thing they do seemingly get crap for that they don't deserve is crowds........i rarely wait in line and most waits are under 5 minutes.

The snow tally's are pretty good at K. There is a big difference between the peak and the bottom of skyship. I think if you want to be the most specific you need to measure top, mid, and bottom or do a tally like MRG does. The vertical is what it is. If you want all 3K you got it. sure it gets flat in there, but i always do a lap to the bottom of Rt. 4 when there is snow. The K1, SPE, and SS all have some good vert to them. bear and canyon quad move u up the hill pretty quick. the place is HUGE and if you are knocking on the terrain then im not sure you know your way around the mountain...

Been all over the mountain, just saying the terrain really doesn't overly impress me. It's good, but not sure it really differs from most NE mountains and when you stack it up against some of the other big boys Sugarloaf, Bush, Saddleback, Stowe, etc it doesn't stack up.........variety yes, but diffuculty no......lot of flat areas as well. Just saying. As I have said before, it is now the mountian of choice and I enjoy it. There are plenty of plus, apres, lifts, lift lines, snowmaking, etc.

Yes, I forgot that, the glades are good, very good. I would say on a good snow stretch they are up there with Jay.

Might even be better then Jay in that there are more "secret" stashes at K. There are no secrets at Jay. Of course with all the super fat skis anybody can ski anything these days. Even if your not a top 40 skier.

But then again, the glades won't be any good this year since "we are due for a bad snow year".

The Killington snow reports are pretty accurate. It has the same orographic lift microclimate as the northern Greens. It's all about perception. When they get a foot of snow on a Wednesday, it's basically gone by the time the flatlanders get to it on Saturday. If you go to Mad River (which gets slightlly less snow than Killington basin) where you have a 600 person per hour single chair, the surface is still good on a Saturday.

If you go to Mad River (which gets slightlly less snow than Killington basin) where you have a 600 person per hour single chair, the surface is still good on a Saturday.

Mad River's snow conditions deteriorate as fast, if not faster, than other ski areas. While the limited up hill capacity is a glorious thing, MRG has a lot less acres and terrain than many other mountains, especially due to their narrow trails. And while the single is great, it only services exclusively a fairly limited part of the mountain. Lower and mid-mountains are also accessible via the Sunnyside Double. On a list of 2k vert mountains that have great snow preservation after a storm due to traffic patterns, Mad River would rate very low on my list.

It was epic from Valentine's Day on.

I'll take that over last year where though we got a lot of snow, almost every storm was followed by a thaw and there was literally zero snow to speak of after 3/1.

This is big for me, since I usually can't take off random weekdays if it snows, I'm always at least a few days behind the storm, and as long as it says cold, I'll be happy. Last year on a few of my trips up north, even when there was a lot of snow on the ground, it was rock hard from warm days and cold nights.

Good point...but unfortunately it's hard for me to get out in April no matter how epic...

I can certainly put up with a delay in November if it means that Christmas week and beyond is better...but waiting until Valentine's Day really sucked.
