ABC how long ago were your horrible lines? Before Q they had the 5 minute guarantee. if you waited for more than 5 minutes your ticket was free. I have skied there 20 times or so and have never been close to 5 minutes in line.
Quite a long time ago (>5y)

I haven’t gone up that way for quite a few years. The time it takes to drive that far, I‘ve changed gear to headed out west (now that I have more vacation, and seniority to take them at my time of choice).

As someone else mentioned, for the Bostonians, Burke is “far” in terms of a day trip. But for us further south of Boston, it’s getting into the realm of fly vs drive. I’ve also not been to Jay for a while. Same calculation.

Good luck to whoever buying Burke. The skiing landscape has changed. They need to figure out who their customers will be, not had been (which is true for all mountains, but Burke is “geographically challenged” so more critical).

So I talked to an insider and know who is the group putting a bid on the Mountain AND the Hotel. The Receiver required it to be a package. The group is made up of three individual stakeholders and the thoughts about "who" would be interested is partially correct. The third stakeholder is a current resort operator and one who is not a stranger to AZ.

I don't have any insider knowledge on this, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Snow Partners (the operating groupd behind Mountain Creek and Big Snow) are the resort operator in this deal. I remember when their CEO (I am pretty sure that is his role), Joe Hession, was interviewed last Fall on the Storm Skiing Podcast, that he mentioned that they had placed a bid on Jay, and that they were looking to get into the VT market. Time will tell, and who knows, now that there is acknowledged bid on Burke, some other groups may get in on the bidding....

Mountain Capital seem to still be on a buying spree. Seems like it could be their kind of mountain.

No eastern holdings, not to say that they couldn't expand east but I would question the need. The one resort they have that could be interesting is Nordic Valley in Utah. They expanded either last year or 2 seasons ago, and it looks like there is more mountain to expand to as well, plus they got approval to build a ski village (albeit smaller then they originally wanted)

I can’t see the benefits for them there.

The Lee Canyon purchase makes total sense since it’s being paired with Snowbowl, Brianhead, NV and Purgatory. These areas are close to major populations and probably aren’t concerned with attracting people from the east. besides, a Burke addition wouldn’t bring them anyone anyways so why bother.

I wouldn't be surprised either way. Just saying they're on a buying streak and a few of their mountains play 2nd fiddle. Nordic to pretty much everything else in SLC/Ogden area, Sipapu/Pajarito to Taos, Willamette to Bachelor, could even say Purgatory/Hesperus to Telluride.

Purg does really well with the more budget minded crowd from Texas/Arkansas. It ain't Telluride but the prices ain't either. It works out really well for folks that regularly ski the other ski areas in the region under that pass since so many more now commit to a trip there.

We've been to Purg/Durango and it's a really fun spot for us. I've been priced out of Telluride.

If the plans for Nordic Valley go through and they put lifts up high it will be an attractive ski vacation for sort of that same crowd, especially for the not so serious vacationer ski crowd as the crowding gets more intense and prices continue to go up at the popular areas. I think it was a smart move honestly.

Had never heard of Nordic Valley. Just read about their expansion plans. Sounds ambitious even if it is still a little low in elevation. Utah could sure use the extra capacity from the sounds of things these days.

What people consider bad for snow in Utah is pretty darn ok and reliable compared to most places in the country/world plus Coleman is pretty good at keeping ski areas that can struggle with natural snowfall successful with the help of snowmaking.

There’s a ton of skiing tourists that don’t see the difference between 250 inch a year ski areas to a 500 inch on average place. It doesn’t really matter to them.

I love little Nordic Valley! IIRC, the new chair (el 7060) and much of the proposed expansion sits higher than the original footprint (el 6300) which saw a fair bit of rain when nearby PowMow and Snowbasin were piling up the snow. It's a shame the proposed gondola from North Ogden got nixed. The only thing American's complain about more than traffic, is ways to avoid it.

I really doubt that MCP is involved in this Burke bid though.
