My family and I decided to take a trip up to Vermont at the last minute on friday due to the forecast for several inches of snow. I am not a big fan of Okemo as most of the terrain is on the flat side, but compared to other southern Vermont resorts they had alot of their terrain open. We also choose that are because it looked like it would get the most snow out of the storm without any change over to mixed precipitation.
I have not been to Okemo or skied in Vermont since January 2002, so alot has changed at Okemo. We started the day at Jackson Gore instead of the main base area and this was a smart move as there were no crowds at all.
I skied with my son for the first three hours of the day from 8:30 - 11:30 on upper and lower Mountain Road and the beginner terain at Jackson Gore. We stopped skiing together at that time and braked for lunch.
We had lunch at Jackson Gore in the roundhouse cafe and the food and service were stellar, the cafe is immaculatly clean and the whole complex is well designed. After lunch it had started to snow fairly heavy and I skied all the open trails at Jackson gore and found them to be VERY icy despite about 1-2" of new snow, none of the trails are very steep but the Jackson Gore Express had NO line at all.
I proceeded to ski back to the main mtn and skied World Cup and Chief and both trails had good snow. The best snow on the mountain was on the South Face on trails like Dream Weaver, Punch Line and Off The Rim. The best trail of the day was Blind Faith which by 2:00pm had about 3-4" of nice powder on both edges.
I quit skiing at 2:30 as my legs were getting tired and returned to Jackson Gore by skiing Blue Moon and Lower Limelight, these trails were horrendously icy and I was glad to make it down in one piece. Overall the skiing day was fun and the conditions were good, but there is alot of ice underneath the new snow. Lift tickets were $67. ouch, that is the most that I have ever payed for a lift ticket.
