Does fear of getting hurt and not being able to ski stop you from doing some non-ski activities?

It doesn't stop me. But fear of getting hurt has stopped my father from doing pretty much anything. He uses that as his excuse for not trying skiing, MTBing, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc. Ironically, he had a heart attack 3 years ago. Perhaps he should have tried a few of those risky sports instead... (Luckily, he is alive today, but back to his old weight and old habits....)

That's not to say that I don't fear getting hurt while participating in activities. I have propensity for it, apparently. But I don't let that stop me.

I wouldn't say fear of not being able to ski but rather fear of getting hurt and not being able to work and pay the bills. I do however have a nice short/ long term disability policy if needed.

No, because for the most part, I don't take uncalculated risks. I enjoy risk taking, appreciate the commensurate reward, but I won't do stupid things. Thank college for my appreciation of probability and statistics. If it's a cakewalk but 90% certain I'll get injured forget it. If it's pretty scary but only a 10% chance of getting hurt, I'll go for it.

Look at the winter Olympians who go off and do some really crazy stuff in the summer. That's part of the risk-taking mentality they have. They know what they have to lose, so they do the fun stuff, just not the stupid stuff. Me too.

If we didn't take risks, life would be pretty dang boring. I know people that are pretty fearful of anything that smells of physical risk - driving, predators on a family beach, drinking soda, freezing to death in the winter, fertilizer, biking, locking all the doors at home all the time, a tricked-out alarm system to the 9's and skiing (there, I said it!) So what do they do? Stay home, watch a lot of cable, go to the beach house and stay inside. boooooooriiiiiiiiinnnnnnnng....

And if we stayed inside all summer,to avoid risk of injury, we would not only be bored, but out of shape too.

Skiing is prolly the most "dangerous" activity I do. And the worst sports injury I've suffered in the past 10 years is a ruptured L5-S1 from playing golf, one of the world's safest sports to play.

There's a study that concludes most injuries and accidents occur within 10 miles of home. Conclusion - Don't ski local resorts (sorry Woodchucks!)

That's a sad, but true fact. My most serious injury recently, was rolling my ankle while playing Frisbee with my boys in the front yard! Could hardly walk for a week. Nice Purple and greenish-black colors all around the ankle!

Yeah. I stopped getting stumbling drunk at the bar many years ago. I limit it to the rare occasion like that Martini Party last January where Sunday was a total writeoff. I disovered I get really hurt the next morning and can't ski.

Hell yeah..I don't ride a motorcycle..mountain bike or go bungee jumping..The only thing worse than getting injured skiing would be getting injured doing a non-skiing activity and then missing out on skiing. Knock on wood but in my almost 20 years of skiing, I've only been injured twice and both times..I was only out for a few days. One time was when I fell on a tree-stump on my upper thigh and the other time was when I fell hard on my left shoulder..nothing was broken or seperated..just muscle damage..but waiting for the x-ray results was nerve racking..I'd still ski with a broken arm but just really cautious..

no...doesn't matter the sport, skiing or otherwise; any risks I take are calculated with no thought of other activities while contemplating the risk.....but I do contemplate other areas in life it might affect......work/family

It's not fear per se, but it's always in the back of my head. Particuarly when I'm in the air during a fall trying to adjust the way I land in a split second. After you tear your ACL/MCL you'll do what you can to make sure it doesn't happen again, even if that means an extra bruise or two on your face.

Everyone tells me they won't paddle white water because they are afraid they will die.

Based upon my experiences with the sport, that's a very legitimate fear. For what ever reason though, I feel pretty safe in a raft, but not a kayak

I disagree. You were put in a bad situation, likened to being taken to the top of an advanced run on your first day on skis...but thanks for illustrating my point to some degree.

So I guess you should answer that yes, fear does keep you from doing things.....and I think we all have our limit. I won't Ice Climb.
