Trip Report: Incredible day at Pico!
I went to sleep last night with mixed emotions, the prediction of 12 inches of snow in the area brought out both feelings of joy and fear. Fresh snow can make for a wonderful day but I’m skiing with my son and the last time we went out in fresh powder he didn’t have a good day. The fear of unfamiliar conditions leading to a crappy day weighed heavy on me last night, I was up until midnight reading AZ trip reports and other reviews of various mountains in the general vicinity. Pico fit the bill for what I thought would be the best for us, small crowds and good trail mix of groomed + ungroomed. I couldn’t be happier with our choice.
Upon waking I was disappointed to only find 6 inches on my car but it was still snowing. Hit the road and an hour later pulled into a lightly crowded Pico parking lot. I was like a kid in a candy store, running from my car to the lodge so we could get out there in the snow.
Clicked in about 9:15 and walked up to an empty HS quad  Empty lifts were the standard for the day. Took a quick run on Fools Gold to get to the Summit Express HS quad. The snow was great!
Warm up run was down Forty ‘Niner. Jake did great. The snow was incredible. Jumped back on the Summit quad and Jake declared he wanted to try out Summit Glades. What a trail. Soft bumps and fresh powder the whole way down. At the end of the run Jake declared that Summit Glades was now officially his favorite trail.
It kept snowing until about 1:00 PM. Then cloudy with small breaks of sun and some low flying clouds.
Jake’s top 3 trails for the day were Summit Glade, Upper Giant Killer and Birch Glades. Summit and Giant were indeed fun and I really liked Upper Pike.
Pico is a great little mountain.
