2006 Trip Report #: 48! New TB record!!!
Resort: Pico Mountain
Conditions: SC/FG
Weather: Clouds Breaking to reveal Bluebird skies, highs in the 40’s. NW winds 20-35 MPH.
Trip Report: Some afternoon turns. Was expecting soft snow and turns on KA, Sunset 71, Pike, etc. Got there at 1pm. Was literally one of 15 cars. Mountain looked good, but I was worried that the Summit was closed due to wind.
The lodge was eerily quiet, in comparison to the last time I was there. Got to the Golden Express and then headed to the Summit. Turns out only 49er, Mid and Lower Pike was the only thing going off the top. The rest was frozen over or thin to bare.
Did a couple spins and then hit each of the runs open off the Golden HSQ. Amazing spring snow down there. 49er was FG mainly...the thaw line was about 60 percent up the mountain.
I was considering heading to K-Mart to check it out since there was not much open But on a hunch I stayed and the sun came out. I headed back to the top. 49er softened a bit more and they dropped the ropes on Mid and Lower KA. Nice soft snow. Mid Pike was amazing. Hero turns and nobody.
So the thoughts of leaving to go to Kmart quickly ended. I was doing laps on the Summit Quad...hitting Mid and Lower KA, and the Mid and Lower Pikes. No lines, nice soft snow, some great sun. But the wind was keeping things firm on some trails.
Grabbed the last chair at 3:56 and enjoyed the last run down 49er to Mid KA down to the base. Back to the silent lodge. What a great afternoon. Just wish that more was open...but I got the goods earlier this season and was and
