2006-2007 Report # : 38
Trip Report: The skiing last week was great at Pico, and after some more snow, it was even better. We got there at 8:50 and noticed two things--first, the cars were all the way out to Route 4 and were just parking anywhere possible. Second, the Summit HSQ was not turning at this point. After finding a spot to park, we headed in the lodge and booted up. Word had it that the Summit HSQ did not spin until 9am for some reason
It was a nice sunny morning and the temps were mild. First was some runs on the top. We did a spin down Sunset '71: great shape. Lower Sunset was freshly groomed and amazing....I hit a couple soft spots on the side and almost lost it. We ducked into Lower KA....which Ms. TB loved.
We then did 49er. Great bumps and soft snow. Yes, there was actually snow on the trail. We cut onto Sunset Schuss, which was money. Great groomed freshies. We cut onto C Slope and then back to the HSQ. Some nice bumps forming on C Slope.
Next run was down KA all the way. Upper was in great shape, as was middle. Lower was not tracked out at all....people seem to miss the turn off.
We did another run down Sunset '71 and then down 49er/Sunset Schuss before taking a break for Ms. TB to get the short sticks on...they are a much stiffer and better for her in the bumps and soft snow. Her skis are a bit too soft for these conditions.
To get back to the Summit, we took Little Pico Triple and Bushwhacker down to the HSQ. There were some cowboys hitting the Little Pico Liftline....oh yeah....they looked like something out of the Meatheads!
Back up to the top we went. This was the only day I've seen a long line at the HSQ and it disappeared around 11am or so. The first run after the break was Upper Pike, which had some nice bumps on it. I started on skier's right at the top and then headed down the left side about a third of the way down. The bumps were not quite set up yet....and were a bit choppy. The snow was pretty heavy too. It was our first non-groomed run of the day and Ms. TB was :x
From here, we hit the Summit Glades for the entire length, taking a long run down the bumps. Some incredible snow and scenes. We stopped halfway down for me to get some pics. Ms. TB's favorite spot (and run of the day) was the solitude of Summit Glades East....she said she loved the silence. Some nice snow. This, and Sunset Schuss, are true Pico.
We did one more 49er/Sunset Schuss run before heading to lunch.
After lunch it was Ms. TB's Outpost tour. She was a bit too tired to be a cowgirl, but she was able to handle the bumps of Sidewinder, Bronco, and Wrangler before calling it a day.
I grabbed the short sticks and headed back to the Outpost. The lifties recognized me, "When this place is open, do you ski anywhere else?"
"Wow, you ski here a lot!"
My response was simple: the best terrain was here and it was only open on the weekends.
"Yeah, they NEVER open this midweek...it's a shame."
First run was down Sidewinder. Much easier on the shortboards. The headwall is well covered...best I've seen. The bumps are HUGE!
Doozie was great too....I had some good lines
I did Wrangler, which was in great, great shape with some incredible snow and bumps.
Now the plan was to ride up Outpost and then do Summit Glades once more before meeting Ms. TB. I had a time limit....but when I got to the top of Outpost, I got a bit emotional. I was torn--Summit Glades, which were great, but accessible midweek, or Outpost, which was a weekend only joint and will go first if the temps warm too much. So I banged a right and headed down Sidewinder...past some struggling intermediates (not the first ones stuck on the Sidewinder). Incredible headwall and some nice lines. Then it was Wrangler once more. Wow.
I huffed it down to the base and did one final spin at 2:55 down A Slope....I did consider the liftline, but it looked like there was some prominent rocks and ledges and I was solo. So A Slope was the call. It was INCREDIBLE. Deep, deep snow and bumps. The kind of crud I love. I hit the steepest part of the trail, making some short, steep turns before catching up with a father and his young son.
"Incredible, huh?"
"Yeah."
With that, I was down the old T-Bar line, picking some great snow. At the bottom, my legs were on fire....I just barely made it to the lodge
A great day. I love skiing the natural terrain and getting into the real Pico. Ms. TB dug the natural stuff as well...her legs didn't hold up long though in the heavy snow.
