Places to backcountry ski in Quebec

I'm looking for recommendations of places to do backcountry skiing in Quebec. I live in northern VT, so places that are within a moderate day's drive (8 hours or less) are of the greatest interest.

I'm not much into winter camping anymore, but neither am I able to spend hundreds of dollars per night on high-priced lodging, so a region that offers reasonably-priced bed and breakfasts, and the like, would be preferred. Backcountry hut systems are of interest, too. My husband and I are intermediate level skiers, so we're looking for an area that offers easy to moderate terrain.

Thanks for any tips!

I'd love to hear more about the Chic Chocs, but at the moment am more focused on locations a bit closer to northern VT, something reachable for a long weekend (i.e., 3 nights or so). Thanks.

Maine huts trails is more xc, at least for the portion we did. But it was really fun, and the cabins are pretty sweet.

Back when I was in college in 98, we did a spring break backcountry ski trip to the Groulx Mts in Northern Quebec. From Hanover, NH, it was still I think a 15-20 hr drive north, but man, it was well worth it. We had a guide for 8 days, and it was so remote we were probably were the only ones around within a 100 mile radius. I just did a google search and found the itinerary for the upcoming trip. Its probably more than you were thinking, but its worth checking out if you can manage something like this!

These are some great ideas. Thanks everyone. The Groulx Mountains sound particularly intriguing, but yes, not something for a long weekend. Will do some more research on it, though. Wolves and caribou--sounds fantastic!
