"The Polar Express Quad chair lift is Temporarily out of service, it will resume service as soon as possible. The following trails are temporarily out of service Conifer, Tenth mountain, and Smith Walton."

That's a crappy thing to happen on a big vacation week. :-x

If it's not up and running soon, racing might get pushed back a week or so. It did last year too, but it wasn't for mechanical reasons . . .

Things are going to be really fun on Ralph's......

If that's not up for tomorrow's storm, and the New Year's celebration, they'll be hurting.

I've been on Smith-Walton in the middle of a blizzard in powder with the wind howling up the slope, and had to pole down the "headwall" to get any kind of speed maintained.......

Wow.....thanks for posting Zand. Well done again.....

What a nightmare for wa if it isn't replaced soon...

Anyone got the scoop?

I was going to take my son up on Friday and ski 1/2 day...any idea what tix $$$ will be if the main mountain lift is down? My first and only visit this year was a huge disappointment....and it seems despite the early epic conditions wa has had a run of bad luck with the lifts....first Minuteman and now this.....

My fav trail is Hitchcock anyway(plus my kid will be first day out on new boots) so we likely would still go.

What'sup w/ wa?

I think I'm going to blow off work tomorrow for the snow. And, with the quad down, no sense staying local -- I think I'll be heading for Crotched.

Talking about Wa, is the Interactive WebCam working for others?
Since they have changed to new version, all I get is the message
saying "You connection to the camera has timed out" and never
see any picture.

It hasn't worked here for about a week. I think it's just down. Bummer, as I use it to determine if it's too crowded before I bother heading over there.

I was there last week (12/22) for night skiing. The lift went down at 7:00 pm, a liftie was saying it would be a long wait so I called it a nite. Seems like a re-occuring problem.

All webcams are back up and working as of this post. They were down for maintenance, public wireless coverage was expanded as well during the down time.

There was some explanation of the past problems on the Wachusett blog, and even a mention of us!

"Lots to talk about this last day of 2007: It's New Year's Eve, with 6 inches of fresh snow overnight last night, great conditions, all 22 trails open for tonight - skiing and riding until midnight!

All lifts were back up yesterday afternoon after a bit of electrical upset the other day on Polar Express. Alpine Zone and the nelsap discussion board were full of chatter - noting that Polar Express was down temporarily, and speculating about the cause. The chatter ranged from enlightened to breathtaking.

Turned out to be the computer-controlled chair spacing, which in turn caused the lift to shut down. Wa says all appears to be OK now, but the long-term fix is a new high-tech $90,000 Pilz gizmo top and bottom to replace the current electronic processor, and a three-clutch spacing system to replace the current four-clutch system. All the old lifties turned out to help get the Polar up and running when the problem arose.

In other news, the Ski Train is running from North Station in Boston to Fitchburg, where a bus will shuttle folks to the mountain - all aboard Saturday and Sunday mornings, and (new this season) Saturday nights. Trains also are set to run on MLK Day and Presidents Day. More info elsewhere on the Wachusett Web site.

Biodiesel - a combo of used cooking oil and diesel fuel - is powering Wa's groomers this season, so if you start thinking about french fries while cruising down the corduroy, maybe that's why. Wa is always looking for new sources of fat - how about a closed system: french fries to liposuction to the fuel tanks?"

Ya know ... I noticed a huge gap between two chairs on that lift when I was there on the 28th. Any connection?

Probably... if there was a huge gap there, then other gaps need to be smaller to compensate, when they get too small is when the lift shuts down (I believe).

I went to WA with my son on Sunday night and I have to say it was the worse conditions i've skied there in a long time the entire mtn was a sheet of ice and to my surprise they weren't grooming any trails which is something they do for the evening crowds. Now with the 12' of natural they received in the last two storms it's probably a lot better.
