Anyone have any experience with handheld GPS tracking systems on the slopes? As in, the ones that keep track of the vert you've done, average speed, etc.? Worthwhile? Nerdy? Cool? Stupid?

I saw this site on the internets and was intrigued....

Some people seem to like it:

If tracking your routes in bounds helps you feel better about yourself - then go for it!

i only use my GPS OB... To mark points and stuff...

Saw this one on display at the Boston Ski Show last November. It looked really good displayed on a nice LCD, was very interactive and had any statistical info you can think of. Very graphical interface that outlines all runs taken and breaks it down from there.

If I had had a few extra $ on me, i would have picked it up...

I had one of the early versions. The garmin with the walkie talkie in it. It lost signal often, ran out of batteries quickly and overall just did not do what I thought it would. The day I stopped using it is when it said my top speed was 76. That thing was way out of wack.

I dont use anything now. Not even a watch. When I am going backcountry I will carry a map and a compass.

What device do you use for this purpose? I was waiting for Garmin to come out with an easy to use device with pre-loaded topos at 20' intervals, but I think they're only down to 50' intervals at this point, so I'm holding off.

I've found mine incredibly useful for mountain biking, but I really don't see the need for lift-serviced skiing.

Same thing here... Very useful on a bike... or when touring out of bounds... Then you want to know where you've been, how to head out and where to go next...

Inbounds, not useful at all to me
