it definitely doesn't have to be a powder day to be a quality day. friday hitting jay on wet snow and packed snow conditions with NHPH and the sledhauler was a real treat and definitely a high quality day.

For me, it is quantity over quality. If you ski in all conditions, then those powder days become so much more appreciated.
I'm not saying that I don't ski in all conditions. I'll ski in any conditions and I go for quantity, but I still prefer quality.

Quantity over quality. Quality follows anyway. If you get a lot of days out, you get the quality anyway cause you were already there. ;) sitting at 55 days.

Another thing to add is if I can't have quality I atleast want something that is really hard. For example a weeks ago at Wildcat I just lapped the same run even though it was half blue ice and bare spots because it atleast made me think and got me scared every once in a while.
Likewise. This was sort of what I was getting at when faced with a non-quality day.

Well said, Bob. I guess the question here is would you sacrifice quantity for quality. In reality (and luckily) this isn't a decision we must face. I don't know that many of us would just not go skiing if it's not an epic day. Just ski. The great days will come.

I could care less either way as long as I am having fun sharing the alpine experience with my son. Non quality skiing, ie bad weather or icy conditions make him a stronger skier and realize that not every day can have ideal conditions. Living where I do makes it harder to get to a ski area when conditions are ideal due to the long distance drives involved. Skiing for me is only part of the equation as I love snow just as much as I love skiing.

Out of my 18 days so far, I would say that 14 where of great quality, with the rest being so so, but still fun. Next year we hope to double our days out together:cool:

Nice post loafer and inspiring. My oldest daughter starts next year. Can't wait. Oh and I guess your quantity will likely increase next year, eh? ;)

I say quality for the most part. I don’t have the time or resources to just go whenever I want now. I’ve had a lot of seasons of 40+ days and a couple pushing 80 or 90. I also didn’t have other things like children, house, wife, etc. Having to pick and choose, I try to pick days that I will fully enjoy myself. If I have an opportunity to ski now, and the conditions, not weather, but the conditions are crappy, I pass. If im going to get 10-15 days a year, I’ll make them the best days possible. Rain, cold, wind those things don’t bother me. Skiing in a deep freeze after rain does. Not going to waste a "pass" just to say I went skiing. On the other hand, by no means am i saying that i wait around for the perfect day, just that I wont go skiing “no matter what the conditions” I would rather spend the time with my family. That’s my view on it.

for my type of personality, once you have seen the best, the groomers will only suffice for the first two or three times skiing per season, things get boring quick after that if the quality isn't there.

I agree with steve here. I guess its cuz i'm very fortunate to live next to an area that gets the most snow east of the miss, and that I usually have the option to get out everyday if I want to because I don't have to be at work til the afternoon or evenings. I usually pick and choose my days and try to never miss any good pow over 6-8" I will go out in crappy conditions but never on a weekend, and I will go out on a weekend if the snow is good enough.
as for lift service v. hiking, it all depends how I can get the most high quality untracked runs, if it dumps overnight and its a weekday I can hit stashes inbounds all day and hardly ever hit another track. I would much rather lap untracked goodness than only getting one or two runs down something the same or maybe just a little bit better in quality. not to say what JD does isn't rad cuz it is, i'm sure if I didn't have a pass I would be scoping a much bigger variety of BC up and down the green mountain spine like he is. I just totally love the pow and however I can get the most and deepest lines then thats what I do.

I can totally understand that if you don't have the option to ski a lot, then quantity is the way to go and hopefully you will get quality. I was the same way growing up in school, only really being able to ski weekends, I wanted to go no matter what and had fun all the time.

A bad day of skiing beat a GREAT day of Golf

Insane. Wrong. Nope - dead wrong. NFW. Obviously you need to work on your golf game. Will that many of you really be inside cowering from the heat until October? I'll be outside in the sun getting a tan and working on my short game, thanks........:)

I've done both. Not really that good at golf, but I've played. I can see the appeal, but it doesn't even compare the the thrill and satisfaction of skiing. Not even close. And if you don't smarten up Chile, I'll be forced to can you....

Hah - you do not frighten me, mere mortal. You're just jealous of my incredible golf prowess.......someday when we get a few more AZers to admit they're golfers, I will be thrilled to host the 1st Annual AZ Golf Tournament at The Mount Washington Hotel.....

I'm actually stoked to begin mountain biking, swimming, hiking, bbqing, outdoor accoustic jams, sleeping under trees and general summer mayhem... :)

I like a good skiing to summer transition.. Skiing sweet spring bumps in the AM and MTBing in the afternoon.

Here is my answer to that comment:

Personally, I would rather go whitewater kayaking than play golf.
