A male subject fell while hiking on the Cliff Trail above the gondola station on Mt. Mansfield, and required evacuation by stokes litter for back injuries.
Charge him for rescue... Should've had better boots on...

I could go on...

Better boots? Thats a joke right? What happens if you suffer an injury deep in the woods and HAVE to be rescued? Do you ask for the itemized list then too?

I mean accidents DO happen right?

gotcha....whew.....like your quote from Zappa....emails and meessages boards don't pass the tounge in cheek as well as spoken word...

I do agree though that I dislike the idea that they get to decide if they are going to charge me or not. Like maybe they'd base it on if the person was nice and thankful they might not charge them, but if they in any way are nasty.....double the price...there should be some sort of hard and fast rules..

Eh...hopefully i'll, nor anyone else here, will ever need rescuing...

Accidents do happen, but if someone is not responsible enough to have the skills and resourse to get themselves out, who should pay? The fact is, Law enforcement and taxpayers are tired of footing the bill for what, in the public eye, are considered reckless acts.

I do not necessarily travel in as large a party as I should in certain areas. I do try to travel with people with at least some basic navigation, communication, first aid/rescue and survival skills.

Maybe when a subject is rescued, perhaps the agency should inform the subject of any "return policy" that comes with the cost recovery. :)

The costs are generally itemized.

Don't like these laws? Vote to change them, or stay inbounds.

I just want to know if I'm rescued and charged for it - I'm getting my moneys worth...
Trained search and rescue personal - not some backwoods volunteer fire dept guys on their crappy snowmoblies..... If the entire vollunteer fire dept turns out on thier snowmobile... Not sure thats something I want to pay for..

Not something I want to experience, never mind pay for!

SAR efforts vary greatly by states. VT and NH the AHJ are statewide Law Enforcement agencies that are very particular about who they have volunteering. Stowe Hazardous Terrain Team is a first class operation. UVWRT, although less focused on high angle rescue, is highly regarded in the their level of skill, training and dedication.

It doesn't sound like you're overly impressed with the efforts in the 'skills!

The volunteer rescue guys showed up in their pajamas and looked tired and hung over... Not really on the ball...

I don't think the VFD and volunteer EMT crews are quite the same guys who go out on SAR runs in the mountains. Rather, all the SAR guys are probably EMT's too (kind of go together), but I doubt many of the EMTs are SAR.
I'm pretty sure that anyone who gets rescued in a time of need has any problem paying- you could be Grizzly Adams, but if somebody's gotta come in and carry you out, you're going to be grateful.

In fact, I'd hazard to say the more skilled you are, the more likely you are to really need a rescue if they come looking for you, since you'd have missed your return times and people who know you know what's what have gotten worried. I'm pretty sure if I went hiking for three days my wife wouldn't actually start to worry for five. If I'm stuck somewhere where I've run over my time by two days, I'd be willing to buy Bubba a sixpack for carting me out on his ATV. Or cough up $3K for a chopper ride to the ER.

dmc, you may have taken my issue out of context. i am a fond proponent of devil's advocate. but as a devil's advocate, you ask a question and suggest alternatives and step back, not get into a passioned debate in which you seem to take a stand. someone presenting the other side of an argument just to play the debate up a bit is best contributing to content by not doing anything more than questioning logic.

just my two cents. they aren't really worth much any way. cool cool.

I thought that's what I was kinda doing...

I mean... What's it really matter...?
It's just an internet chat board...

I'm mearly amussing myself by promoting debate as well as learning from the opinions that I gleen off of responses...
Sorry if it's not what you want to hear... But I'm amused...

I think I've realized a possible source of confusion: In many parts of VT (and other parts of NE), the EMS/Ambulance services are provided by an agency separate from the Fire Department, often called "Rescue". For example: "Stowe Rescue" provides the ambulance service in Stowe. They do not provide technical rescue or SAR services.

Similarly, the only paid ambulance service in the Winhall, VT area is "Stratton Mountain Rescue", which is an ambulance, not a SAR/Tech rescue provider. (Some of the folks that ride that box are very capable in SAR/tech rescue, but that is not what SMR is, it's a bus to take sick and injured people to the hospital.)
