Resort or Ski Area: Saddleback

Conditions: Spring, PP, crust

Trip Report:

I had a friend up from Virginia this weekend for the New Year. He loves Saddleback and his wife hadn't been there before. Decided since Sunday was Maine day it was worth it.

The day had an upside/ downside aspect.

Got to the lot at 8:30 and on the chair by 9:30. 3/4 of the mountain was covered in fog. Quite warm. Mid 30's easily. By about 10:30, the fog was lifting and the sun peaked out.

The crowd was good despite conditions. Their trail report said over 50 trails open. Unfortunately, it was more like 10. If it wasn't groomed, patrol threw up the ropes. They claimed all the glades were open however, the only ones not roped off were Thrombosis and Casablanca. Dark Wizard, Intimidator (upper and lower) as well as a few others were roped off. North West Pass was also roped off so you couldn't get to a lot of the stuff. Silver Doctor was just plain scary.

The quad was spinning but only Tri-Color and Casablanca were open. The storm absolutely had it's way with Saddleback. Looking into the woods I didn't dare venture in. Rocks, Trees, and stumps EVERYWHERE.

The upside, the groomers skied great. Really great. The edges were soft, buttery, and delicious. ROTD was definitely Tri Color -> Grey Ghost -> Lower Golden Smelt. Stay to skiers right on all of them and it was fantastic. Lower Peachys Peril was fairly good as well. Big bumps but soft and forgiving. Upper Peril was not so awesome.

Overall, a good day. Ended it with a trip to the Swig and Smelt. Once they get a foot or two of more snow, they will be in great shape.

Nice report, BLR
Looks like conditions detriorated even more than when we were there on Saturday. I skied many of the same trails as you and didn;t see quite as many brown patches as depicted in your pics.
Don't worry about not having the glades open....you wouldn;t have wanted to ski them anyhow. My buddy and I went out to Casa on Saturday AM and it was virtually un-skiable. Extremely wet, heavy snow but w/o the benefit of being packed down or skied on like the trails were.

We'll be back up this wknd and things should be in better shape after a week of snowmaking and hopefully some natural on Friday/Sat!

Thanks!

yeah, I rode the chair with some guy who said Casablanca Saturday PM was impossible. While waiting for the quad, a dad had been waiting 20 minutes for his son to come down muleskinner. I cannot imagine that went well for him.

The wet-heavy snow you described froze up on skiers left of Peachey's Peril. Your ski would sink down then get stuck under the crust making it impossible to turn. My buddy did an ejector seat at one point after sinking. Scary. I am praying they get more snow.

Cool pics. Nice job capturing pitch. Not that I've been to SB, but some of those look steep.

Upper Peachy's Peril and the Headwall of Golden Smelt definately have some pitch to them! Great Classic NE style trails....like most of SB's runs.

You guys are funny - incurable optimists. Glass always at least half full. I say that with affection and respect. :)
Typical Alpinezone trip report (Snowjournal is similar): "Conditions were great, except for the ice, crust, rocks, bare spots, stumps, grass . . . everything that was open skied great."

And "Once they get a foot or two of more snow, they will be in great shape." That would be true of a lot of areas under a lot of circumstances.

Again, thanks for the honest report. Just thought I'd touch on the rose-colored aspect which amuses me a little.

Thank you for the report BLR. Mother Nature is cruel. Hard to believe we went from this on 12/30 (looking from the top of the Golden Smelt Headwall)

Oh to be sure. I guess a better way to have put that would be to say when they regain everything that they lost. I was just amazed looking at some of the stuff Salsgang had posted on his trip report 2 days before.

Again, thanks for the honest report. Just thought I'd touch on the rose-colored aspect which amuses me a little.

That's just how I roll. :snow:

Amen. Your pic of Smelt makes me want to cry.

Temps are terrific..supposed to get quote "snow Showers" Friday thru Sunday. Here's weather.com link for Kingfield:
http://www.weather.com/weather/weekend/USME0203

$.01

We'll take that. :daffy: Plan to pull into Rangeley by 6PM friday. My snow magnetism this season so far has produced at least a foot or more of freshness for destinations (NH, W.VA) outside PA. Sorry, PA, no soup for you.:-o
