Saddleback 3-18-07 (Pics Added)
Date(s) Skied: March 18, 2007
Resort or Ski Area: Saddleback
Conditions: PP on the groomers. Ice on the ungroomed
Trip Report: Sweet! Excellent day at Saddleback. First time I have ever been there. My wife learned to ski on this mountain but has been 20 years since she has been back.
First off, the new lodge they have built is IMPRESSIVE. I know you don't go to a mountain to admire a lodge, but holy smokes taking a break beside a roaring fire place RULES. It is a great post and beam structure. Well laid out and very comfortable.
OK - to the skiing. I was most impressed. We stuck to the blue / green groomers off the Rangeley double chair. We had plenty of terrain to choose from. We all loved Hudson Highway - a winding narrow greenie from the top of the chair. Gray Ghost was a wide blue groomer where you could really rip some turns. We had some nice runs down Green Weaver and Silver Doctor as well.
The only tough spot of the day was a run down Peachy's Peril. They left it ungroomed which is normally not a big deal. However, they did get a good amount of freezing rain Saturday afternoon. So it was SLICK. We slid down that trail sideways and my wife took a good tumble. I think they closed it later in the day. Fortunately, the groomers did a great job chopping that stuff up on most of the mountain.
We spent some time fooling around on the lower learning area. They had a nice big gentle tree run. We took 3-4 runs playing in the trees. We also had fun skiing backwards and 360's. Loads of fun with the wife and kids. For someone learning to ski, this area is perfect. It is below the base lodge and they have 9 super learning trials to choose from and a nice new 3000 foot Quad to service it.
If Saddleback is able go forward on their plans to add more chairs to service more of the terrian, it would really rock. Regardless - I highly recommend checking out Saddleback. They have got great terrain for all levels.
I hope to add a pic or two tomorrow when I get my camera cord from work.
