And be prepared for delays due to buses! ;)

Yes, be careful. School hasn't started here yet--tomorrow--but it's a good reminder.

YEA!! School started today for my 6 yo. Sorry for my obvious enthusiasm, but he's been driving my wife carzy this summer. I'm happy for her piece of mind. Which is indirectly related to my piece of mind!

I hear ya on that front, our kids aren't old enough to start school just yet. I'm sure I'll be just as happy when the time comes!

Crap, I hate dealing with the buses...
What I hate more are the soccer moms who "need" to have a conversation with the bus driver at every stop...

This time of the year makes me glad I can do some work from home...I typically change my schedule to wait out the morning commute.

I hate that the bus has to stop at every kid's house to begin with. Before you know it the bus driver will be going into each kid's house to help get them ready. What ever happened to neighborhood bus stops??? When I was a kid the bus made 1 stop on our street to pick up as many as 10+ kids.

Damn, I'm starting to sound old....

We live maybe 0.5 mile from an elementary school and it's a full-busing school--kids are not allowed to walk there. When I was a kid, as long as you lived within 1 mile of the school, you walked.

And yes, I so wish I could send my daughter off to school this year. I need a break!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I was a kid we had a bus stop with 50 kids at it...the bus made one stop at the field...all kids from all streets in the village convened there. It was a blast too! We played all sorts of great games in the field with all those kids while we waited for the bus. I think most of us went to school with grass stains and torn clothes! Oh yeah, and there were no parents watching to be sure we were safe...but we were.

It amazes me, and this amazement is substantiated by some comments in this thread, that some people dislike their kids so much. I've always felt that the way my kids behave is by far a reflection on how I behave towards them and how I interact with them. I just don't get the concept of wishing away the time in a way that sounds like, "can't wait to get rid of them".

It's not a dislike. It's the fact that 24 hours a day, every day, it's all I do right now. And after a while, the normal sibling fighting, "exploration" of the house which results in large messes, getting into things they shouldn't, etc, is tiring. Very tiring. You go to work and get a break from your kids, right? I don't. I love them very much--but everybody needs a break. And sleep at night doesn't count because mine *still* wake up 1-4+ times a night on a regular basis.

That's okay...next week *I* go back to school so that's when things will get really interesting around here...

Especially the ones that drop a kid off...then drive 75 feet, stop, drop another kid off. Fawking kids have it so easy these damn days.

On my street, there's a woman who drives her two kids to the end of the block to catch the bus.
Yes, in an SUV.
Yes, they're all three overweight.

Literally in the town where my office is, there is a family whose house is on the entry road to the high school (front door of there house is literally maybe 30 feet from the entry road) and their house is maybe 75 yards infront of the front door to the school. The school bus actually stops in the entry road and picks the adolescent male up to bring him to the high school  I see this happen maybe once a week during the school year as I'm driving by the on the way to my sons preschool.

A big GIANT WTF in my book!

It was simple back 25 to 30 years ago when I rode the bus to school. I lived on a through street in a development, where my road was just under a mile long. Probably 80 to 100 houses on the road. The bus for my street literally stopped twice at the cul-de-sacs that were maybe 1/3 to 1/2 mile apart. You walked from your house, along the side of the through road that DIDN'T have sidewalks to what ever cul-de-sac was closest to your house and waited. No Mom or Dad driving you from your house to sit in the station wagon and wait either!

OMG! Just realized that I'm sounding more and more like my parents!

Well that's they way you choose to interpret those comments! What's that say about you? I'm sure no one in this thread, or on this board for that matter, "dislike their kids so much" they "can't wait to get rid of them"! From the sounds of it, you were/are an amazing parent. Of course as Carrie pointed out, you were probably at work for most of the drudgery part of it. But whatever, we can now all aspire to be as good a parent as you are.
