Hmmm, all sounds very good. If we stay east, Jay might be the place! Thanks all, good sales job.

Not visible much from that angle.

Not visible much from any angle!!! Until you get there! When you get there, you can't miss it... People won't probably like it too much... but it's hard to ride anything else once you reach the top and see all that open stuff! Super wide and open turns aren't too common around here... but then, it gets the gapper all over if you still allow access via the resort.

Totally different subject... but still one that pisses me off!

Couldn't agree with you more! Never got up there last year though. Is my understanding that access will be allowed from the resort this year correct?

Didn't see anything about that anywhere... I hope it stays closed... There is still a gate at the ridge...

Traffic was less last season... but still... The place needs to regrow... but it will probably never will...

I saw that they were allowing access again as well, maybe Steve posted it or maybe in some press release. Or maybe some one else posted something about it. Can't remember where, but I know I saw it.

The press release is posted on my web page. It circulated the net about three or four weeks ago but I couldn't find an official source online. Supposedly there was a mid-week meeting at Jay Peak a few weeks back about the announcement but I haven't heard any follow up from that meeting. Then again, the blockheads scheduled the meeting mid-week so I don't know how many people they were expecting to show up. At last year, it was during a weekend during ski season so it was well attended.

Any ways, access is open only after it is deemed there is enough snow and closed when too much snow has melted or something along those lines. Skiing the cut is still prohibited but I suspect many folks are still going to do it. Won't be me.

Is the French-Canadian influence strong at Jay? Noticeable at all? Does it add anything special to the place?

Yep, there is an inflence... Stateside chalet is probably 50% french-canadian... And as mentionned, they have 2 cash drawers everywhere... Also, Jay has secondary offices across the border as well as mailing adresses. You use to be able to get ski lessons easily in french... but something happened last year with a stupid law or something... And Jay was no longer able to hire canadians at the ski school... Cause apprently, finding french-speaking vermonters is doable! lol! Also mentionned but Poutine on the menu is unusual... (and discusting compare to the real stuff!)

What else... hmmm... Local shops are owned by a canadian... (well, he use to be!) Jay used to be own by canadians... Best riders there are canadian! (alright, flame me!)

You are aware that the entire state of Vermont was clear cut in the second half of the 19th century? There's basically zero old growth forest anywhere in the state and you'd be hard pressed to find a tree in the state that is 150 years old. A 50 foot cut on Big Jay will be mostly invisible in 25 years and completely gone in 50 years. Acid rain is doing far more damage than trail cutters with chainsaws.

Yep totally aware of that... And that's one of the beautiful things you come accross when riding in the woods during summer, you see all these ancient rock gates (rock piles) in the middle of the woods...

Issues here are different... "The Face" at Jay will never re-grow for the same reason...

French is spoken in lift line, smoke meat sandwiches in the International, very fashionable female skiers from Montreal on the tram, odd colored one piece ski out fits and ski school buses in the parking lot.

Thanks. I actually meant Steve (Wright) of Jay Peak when I said "Steve", but cool that it was you who has the press release :)

Stayed there during the MA school break and the NH school break in Feb - we couldn't get over how quiet it was both weeks. Condo was superb and you get lift tickets and free daycare thrown in when you book through Jay Peak. Had a great time and plan to go there again next Feb. Having said that...chatted with somebody who was leaving and they'd had a horrible time - rained then froze every day for a week..........

I skied at Jay during a huge storm in March, '07, and had some of the best snow I've ever had ANYWHERE, bar none (40 inches of powder!). It was phenomenal. Great tree skiing, too.
