"Nearby" is relative. I know that lots of people here drive a few hours to ski, but for me, besides special road trips with the kids, I don't like to drive much more than a half hour or so. There's lots of skiing within that range, but not Black or King Pine.
Black and King Pine are both within half an hour of North Conway/Bartlett. And in a few more minutes and you have Shawnee Peak just over the border in Maine. Obviously a bit further from the other side of the mountains (ie Bethlehem), but areas south of 93 can be a short drive from another inexpensive ski area - Whaleback.

See that's what I don't really get. I don't see BW's facilities as being at all special, unless you're referring to the hotel. What am I missing?
BW is the newest major ski area around, has nice base facilities (I think the base lodge was rebuilt within the last 10 years if I recall), good snowmaking/grooming, and FOUR high speed quads. Top of the line facilities.

Thanks, I do know where those three are located, they're just not within my normal range.
