The correct way to address was to speak to ski school director/mountain manager not directly to the instructor.

This morning at Blue mountain there was a group of about 10 ski instructors who kepts cutting in front of the whole line which was pretty long. They weren't giving a lesson or anything just skiing around for fun. Should they be allowed to cut the line when they're not giving a lesson? I called the one guy out for blatently cutting in front of me and a few hundred others and he looked at me like I was trying to ruin his day..bunch of bullsh*t..

I've never heard of such a thing---no friggin way should that be allowed. Sure they weren't in a clinic or something????

What about ski instructors getting in early second tracks on a powder days on non-groomed trails?

What about ski patrol taking more than their share on a powder day?

Perks of the "job"---you could always join PSIA or NSP to get them

No. It's a customer relations blunder to have any employee cut the line unless there is a blatantly obvious reason for it. My $0.02: I can only think of two:

  1. Instructor with paying customers for a lesson
  2. Patroller responding to an incident

Even the second should be via Sno-moe, if available.

Why do anything to piss off your customers? They pay you, afterall.

I think that sled dogs should always jump to the head of the line. You want 'em at the top of the hill or out on the mountain, not standing in a lift line. You're not going to be able to run a snowmobile up a 30+ degree double black.

The other way of looking at this:

Instructors usually have a fairly brief period of free skiing before they're stuck teaching a group class full of tourons. They get paid absolute crap for that job. Getting in some runs before, between, and after lessons is a way the mountain can retain those people. If the mountain is hammered with people, they're not going to have time to get in any free skiing. Some will quit since they're doing the job to score some free skiing, not for the small pittance they earn teaching.

Besides, there are very few instructors out there free skiing. It's not like it's costing you a whole heck of a lot of time or runs to have a few instructors cutting the line. Why get your panties in a bunch over it?

It's the ski instructors choice to teach a group class full of tourons..and they are receiving a free season pass for themselves and their family. Most of the instructors wait in line with everybody else when they are free-skiing but this particular group was just plain rude. Anyway I will continue to loudly call them out everytime I see it. It's not fair..

Let me get this straight. From what I'm reading, Blue has a special VIP line that is used by season pass holders, ski patrol, and instructors with lessons. You're upset because they're using your VIP line? Or are they cutting every line including the VIP line?

Wrong the VIP line is for Ski Instructors, season passholders and ski patrollers..and the ski instructors are cutting the VIP line..just skiing right along past it and past the guy that organizes groups into 6,,,when they should be standing in the VIP line..Yesterday the VIP line had a 5+ minute wait..the regular line was 10+ minutes and the free skiing instructors wait 7 seconds..I think I was the first person to ever call them out by their stunned and embarrassed reactions..

Got'ch-ya. Would you have an issue with them using the VIP line like everybody else with a season pass?

I can see a sled dog who needs to get up the hill in a hurry cutting everything. I can see ski school private lessons at $100-something per hour cutting everything if the 'VIP' line is 5 minutes. I'm sure nobody in mountain ops has a clue these guys are cutting the line while free skiing. The best thing you could do is capture a video clip of 'em. I'm sure they'd get a big tongue lashing for that stunt.

I am nearly 10 yr former PSIA.....

I still say firm no.

Never once in my ski teaching career did I cut line on a paying customer without a private lesson in tow.

Never.....and I never witnessed any of my fellow instructors do it either.

Great way to recruit business for your book of privates:uzi:

They're allowed to use the VIP line and 90% of them do...it's the 10% that constantly cut the entire line on the busiest of days..Geoff, excellent idea about capturing it on video..I've thought the same thing when me and Atomic Jeff have been harrassed by the ski patrol for "Fast" skiing on Paradise at Blue..

For what it's worth..if one person cuts in front of me in a liftline or at the supermarket for that matter, I let it go..but blatently cutting in front of the entire line in a group of 11 multiple times is just not kosher.

Last season I got bitched at for being first in the singles line at the Gondola at Jackson Hole. After standing for a few minutes, a couple guys asked me "What the F5ck I was doing" and I said I was standing in line. The guy,"Did you see these skis"...and pretty much threatened to kick my ass if I didn't get to the back of the line..I'd love to save my spot in line for concert tickets with a shoe..but just one of my pet peeves..I can only bottle it up for so long before I snap..and I'm glad I snapped at the line cutting instructors..nobody else has the balls to call them out..and tomorrow at Blue, I'm going to speak to someone in the ski school office on behalf of dozens of pissed off season passholders.

Can't wait for you to post the outcome tomorrow night. I gave a guy and his wife shit for dropping his skis in front of the lift Que prior to booting up. Lazy bastard must of thought the ski racks were for the little people and they were special. They did not see a problem with it. Self centered assholes!!

Sorry, comes w/ the territory. Lifts open (usually 1 hour) earlier for On Duty Patrollers.

When the lifts spin for the general public - everything is fair game.
