Date(s) Hiked: Jan, 15th 2007

Trails(s) Hiked: Harriskat Trail to summit of Skatutakee Mt. Thumbs Up trail to Thumb Mt., Thumbs Down Trail to Jacks Pond.

Total Distance:4.9

Difficulty:Easy to Moderate

Conditions:Freezing Rain, Sleet, Snow, Rain, wintery mix.

Special Required Equipment:Some kind of traction...

Trip Report:
It was a really sketchy drive getting here, ice covered absolutely everything. Harriskat Trail ascent was relatively easy, some places almost moderate. The trail takes you through a boulder field, and hardwood forest. The boulder field was pretty exciting. As you near the summit the trail becomes more moderate, and ascends a ledge. The summit is bare with scrub oak, and was socked in with fog. It was actually pretty surreal looking due to all of the ice. Thumbs up trail was pretty well marked, and the summit of Thumb Mountain was also socked in with fog. This had ledges and would have had some nice views I suspect.

The weather alone, made this trip really cool. Harris pond was also very surreal looking. This would be a great place to bring your little ones. I plan on going back with my little ones someday.

Pictures are here!!!

Nice report. Did this same hike in 2004. Nice and quiet...big mountain feel and off the beaten path. Views were decent, but getting grown in.

Well, I guess pretty much all of the SNH peaks have something good to offer, despite their general lack of popularity.. Or maybe I should say relative lack of popularity as the Whites get all the attention :). Maybe I'll hit these sometime, I pass through the area pretty often..

Wow, now there are two fairly obscure SNH peaks! What possessed you to climb those oddballs?

I was looking for something closer to home. Something that would not be to difficult, and my wife would be ok with because I hiked it solo. I was looking for something that would far enough north where it wouldn't be raining. I also I had plans for the evening at my folks house so I needed to be their by 5pm. I was originally going to do Bear Mt. in CT but it was further away time wise, and forecast for rain.

I found them on NHhiking.com, and I have the Southern NH AMC guide so it was perfect.
