The purpose of this thread is to talk about mountains that people either love or hate...
I've found that if there's a bunch of people that hate a place and another group that love it... The mountain turns out to be great...

for instance.... Hunter... You either dig it or hate it so much that you have to tell everyone it sucks.

Cannon gets a bad rap... But also gets a lot of props... Now i need to go there to check it out..

Gore gets the same... but found it to be pretty cool with a ton of possabilities...

well, one example for K would be:

Lovers: Size/Nightlife

Haters: Lift lines, rude people

Cannon's bad rap comes from the previous generation of skiers who have not been back since an effort has been made to groom and make snow.

I remember growing up in the late 80's and early 90's, Cannon was always considered an "experts" mountain. It got to the point where the first time I skied there, I was actually disappointed because I was expecting ridiculous steeps.

Stratton, Okemo, Loon.........many of the more intermediate oriented mountains, but that could simply be ski forum machismo talking.

I've really only seen Sugarbush bashed once in here and that was someone saying how awful the cruising terrain is there. That went over like a fart in church in here

Never heard Stowe mentioned...

Wish your could expound on KMart... Bummer that your done "saying"

 What???

I wish I could as well, but I am busy here at work....

As to KMart, you don't have to look long and hard on here to find why people hate it (shorter season, management, crowds, etc) or love it (party scene, amount of terrain, locaton).

Stowe: folks love it for the terrain, hate it because of pricing and snobbery.

Hard to say I hate Kmart but between that and Mt Snow I don't care to spend time on either. I think it is the clientele.

For what it is worth I would put me in the love catagory for Wa Wachusett - Not for the terrain but because it was the mountian that got us back into skiing. Their polar kids program was GREAT and the place is way family friendly.

Love Gunstock - Family atmosphere, great views, kind of still an old school feel.

Blue mountain
Hunter
Killington
Stratton
Okemo
Camelback
Vail

If it were't for 12 years of internet postings from GSS, I doubt any of us would have ever heard of Blue Mountain. I think I knew Camelback existed before the internet happened but I didn't have a clue that Blue Mountain existed.

In metro-Boston, you get a lot of Loon and Waterville haters. The Ski-93 day tripper hordes from Boston on Saturdays and holidays can make for a pretty ugly experience. You get the same thing in metro-NYC with Hunter. Killington used to have the same issue before the new owners shed 30% of the customers and Killington markets to both NYC and Boston so it gets double the hate. Most of the haters haven't been to the mountain in the last two years to see the difference. I can't blame them for not coming back. It was really bad when ASC took the place discount.

The internet message boards tend to be biased towards steep ungroomed terrain or monster terrain parks. Most of the people participating are on a pretty tight budget so they slam any place that caters to the affluent. Any mountain that specializes in intermediate cruisers for rich people ain't gonna do well. That's why the Vail hate on Rec.Skiing.Alpine. Ditto Stratton and Okemo.

I can have a good time skiing pretty much anywhere.

Sunday River gets some hate...mainly from what I call the Sugarloaf Snobs. I'm a reformed Sugarloaf Snob so I can say it...its part of the 12 steps. Funny thing is, most of them either haven't skied SR, hae skied it a couple times, or haven't skied there in a decade. I used to work in a shop in Freeport and always had fun tweaking the SL snobs...all you had to do to get them all fired up was tell them you prefer SR.

Ultimately, I think many ski areas would receive a lot less 'hate' if people focused on the positive attributes of a mountain. If the negatives are so overbearing, go elsewhere. I skied something like 14 different areas last year, very little negative to say about any of them. I think I bitched about the lifts and lift lines at Smuggs and the long ride to the top at Tenney, but overall, I try and not get overly worked up.

Bromley seems to have a much higher love/hate ratio than many mountains

I haven't noticed much hate towards Bromley. Personally I love it, mainly for its old school vibe and family friendliness. I'm biased because it is where I learned to ski when I was a wee little one. Plus it's got some pretty good terrain on the east side of the mountain.

Do people really hate Gore? A lot of people don't know about it, haven't skied there, or have no opinion of it, but I never really hear about anyone who Hates it.

Mountains I hate:

Wachussett
Stratton

(that's it)

But I never run into people who Love those mountains, either.
