Resort: Ski Butternut

Date Skied: 1/14/06, 9:45am to 1:45pm

Conditions: soft snow to firm snow, heavy rain to no rain.

Trip Report:
I decided to go today solo. As I was driving on the Pike I thought I might of made the wrong choice. The rain was coming down heavy, the temp went from 54 to 43 degrees and it got foggy. As I past the "Highest Elevation on the Pike" sign, the temperature started to rise and the rain started to let up. When I got to the lot at Butternut it was 52 degrees and a steady rain. On went the rain gear. I booted up under the nice large hatch wading in about ½ inch of mud.

The TF Quad was the only lift running on the main mountain. A few skiers dotted the trails. Lift lines were non existent. I would estimate about 100 people were here. The first run down was Lucifer’s leap. The snow was awesome. It was nice and soft and not slushy at all. Very carvable.

Around 11:15AM, the rain stopped and it started to clear up. For the next 2 hours it brightened up and then some heavy fog started to roll in. I skied all of the open trails from Fiddler to the Cruiser trail. The terrain park on Westway /Twist was empty. The rain did take a toll on the trails. There were some bare spots appearing. The upper part of Downspout was bare. The now guns were in place. I did go down lower Applejack and there was a huge stream towards the bottom. That trail eventually was roped off.

After the rain stopped, the snow started to firm up. The temperature was still around 50.

Overall it was a great day. A 1 hour trip to do 14 runs with uncrowded slopes on a holiday weekend, a rarity. I stayed dry & I was happy.

On the way up, I am glad I got new wipers!

I took this after I was done skiing. You can see the fog blocking the summit. Picture taken from the upper lot. Notice the crowded trails. :-?

My lonely car. The other two left that were in this lot.
