If you have never worked at a ski area/resort what would be your dream job? If you have in the past or currently are working in the ski resort biz what is the best job you have had.

Since my first job was when I was young with little financial responsibiliteis it was the best ski biz job I ever had, I still think about it which results in a big smile. I was a member of the Toilet Bowl Patrol at JH. At the time there were bathrooms at 3 locations on the mountain, we skied all day from one to another carrying a broom with several rolls of toilet paper slipped onto the handle. The rest of what we needed were at the facilities.

No stress, no supervision and we got plenty of skiing in. The only downside was when I met a gal at the bar in the evening and she asked me what I did for work. At first I was honest and they, to say the least, were not very impressed. Soooo I took a page from George from Seinfeld and told them I was an architect working for Castanza & Co...funny that didn't help much either...must have been something else....

Right now, I'm a lift foreman at Mt. Sunapee and I don't think that I could get anything better than that. I have thought about doing other positions, but I don't think that much could top the ability to run a lift and be in charge of a couple of guys and a large piece of machinery. I have considered grooming as a good position, as those guys have it made with basically having a $250,000 piece of equipment made to romp around on the mountain in the middle of the night, but I don't think that I could replace my position now. I wouldn't want to do it as a career, but more likely a side job, or something to do in retirement.

I would love to be a ski instructor. I am a corporate trainer and my Dad was a HS teacher. It must be in the blood. I helped out with a few lacrosse teams and loved the experience. Its a great feeling when a student grasps the skill you are trying to teach.

I worked a couple of seasons patrolling at the then new Bear Creek Mountain Club. It happened to be a fairly snowy year and the patrol out-numbered the patrons, members, paying, scamming, etc. on almost every day I worked. I never performed anything that might be a typical patroller duty the time I was there. I showed up on time, I rode the lift, I skied. The coffee and snacks were free. I had a place to stay for free. If a patron asked about a closed trail, we'd ask: "Are you skiing alone?" If they said "Yes", we'd take a run with them. If they said "No", we'd ask them to stop in and say "Hi" on the next run.

Unfortunately, my schedule at my "real" job made it impossible to continue there. Oh well.

If you are in commuting distance you should check in to teaching at Jiminy.

Maine!~ The way life should be
I spent this entire past winter as a ski-tech at a small locally-owned mountain in Maine, and had a ton of fun. It's great to be able to hang out at the shop for a few hours then go hit the slopes before and after work! =) It's made me think that it would be a dream job to be employed again at a ski resort sometime in the future once I'm done with college.

I'd love to own/operate a ski area. The potential for enjoyment is high, as is the potential for stress, frustration, and bankruptcy. Without risk, though, there is no reward.

Failing that, booby inspector is good, with equivalent levels of risk/reward.

I gotta say, those giant flamethrowers they carry around look pretty fun.

I am not sure that it would be worth all the rest.

I would be willing to make that drive every weekend. I need a few more seasons under my belt before I can take a real shot at such a position.

My two favorite ski town jobs I've had:

1. Janitor at Rafters Bar Crested Butte, CO. free pass, $5 an hour, 15 hours a week. True dirt style.

2. Bellman/Shuttle Driver at The Christie Club, Steamboat Springs, CO. Slopeside parking and locker room, night shifts. Health /dental/401k and decent pay, fat tips, tons of perks. Fun job keeping happy skiing millionaires happy.
