Date(s) Skied: 1/6/05
Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown
Conditions: Fresh powder, and groomed powder all with a nice crusty covering from the freezing rain...
Trip Report:
Yesterday started off like most other days, with the drive into work. Except it was snowing hard! After about 5 minutes I turned around to head home to get my ski gear and call in sick. By the time I got everything ready to go the snow had already turned to freezing r@!n/sleet. Since I already called in sick I decided to head up to Sundown anyway. I'm glad I did! The conditions were really good from all the fresh stuff that fell the night before. In addition to the fresh snow they took advantage of the cold temps and blew more snow on some trails. They've been able to keep a good solid base on the whole mountain, which is amazing with all this warm weather we've been having. I don't ussually get to ski on fresh loose stuff like that, so it was a pleasant change/challenge. The best part is the place was virtually deserted. I guess people don't like to ski in the rain After a couple of runs I was covered with ice, most runs I had to stop part way down to clean my goggles off. By about noon the fresh stuff was getting pretty tracked out so they started grooming some trails to mix in some of their man-made snow. By 1:30 I had enough of the freezing rain, not to mention my freezing butt (I didn't wear any long underwear so the frozen chairs were a little cold)
All in all a great day (half day  ) of skiing
