Date(s) Skied: Friday, 12/21/2007, 1:50 pm - 6:50 pm

Resort or Ski Area: Ski Sundown, New Hartford, Connecticut

Conditions: Edgeable snow, bumps, breakable crust. Cloudy, cool, No wind.

Trip Report: Stepped in along with my father-in-law today a bit before 2 pm. We hit all the major routes, Canyon, Nor'easter, Temptor, Stinger, Gunbarrel. Met up with Grassi21 a bit before 3 pm. Grassi and I decided to check out "Area 51" despite not having a lot of faith in the surface. It was rough. Breakable crust and not a truly enjoyable experience. We need another half foot of snow to cover up the crust. Decent base depth in there though.

Spent the rest of the afternoon cruising the main runs with a few Nor'easter bump runs and Ex runs here and there. The skiing was great. Gunbarrel was skiing particularly well. Nice edgeable firm "packed powder". At one point Mikey1 introduced himself to us on Nor'easter. We skied with him the rest of the evening. Good skier and seemed to be loving the bumps as much as we were.

My father-in-law split around 5pm so it was time for a few hours of banging out NE. Meet up with bvibert around 5:45. The bumps are much improved from Wednesday night with several lines and no more death chunks. Still not quite mogul-like with still flat troughs, but they are improving. They'll be dusting them tonight so I think they'll take shape over the weekend. The steeper section on Lower NE is starting to take shape. Some enjoyable lines in there now. 2knees did a good job last night. ;)

Great afternoon/evening. Good to get out with pops-in-law as well as meet a new AZer in Mike.

Vid coming...

Great night to bang out a couple of hours in the bumps. Really did the trick to clear my head! :D

You got it! I really like how this one came out. Not bad for a quickie. I think Lenny's "Dig In" fits perfect; especially with Grassi being in the opening scene. It's not easy at first, but you gotta "dig in" and learn to appreciate bumps. They will simply make you a better skier. I was psyched to see Chris hit that run a number of times today. He did a good job on it. Same with MRGisevil on Wednesday night. It's also no secret that Brian has improved 100 fold in one short year. It really makes me happy to see newcomers to moguls give them a shot and become excited about them. The low angle bumps at Sundown are perfect to get people started. Perhaps moguls will become "cool" again...

That run was radical! ;)

Breakable crust.... huh....

Good time tonight. My legs are feeling it. I don't know if it was the excursion in the woods or holding onto that dollar bill.

Agreed! Wish I had gotten out (but you probably had more fun with Brian anyway). ;)

Brian is always fun to ski with, but I was hoping to see you out there! Rest that knee a bit more and then get at it'!

Great skiing and video guys. I will be heading over this morning to give them a try. If anyone else is going I will be in a gray jacket and helmet and black pants. Stop and say hi.

Thanks for posting the vid, Greg! Timmy and I are heading over there tonight. I'm not sure if he'll meander through the bumps with me or not, but I plan on seeing what you guys've done to Nor'easter!

Thanks Dave. I felt good in the bumps last night. I'm not totally in control, but I had an easier time controling my speed. Back at those bumps on Thursday. Practice practice practice.

Awww, thanks. :D All I know is that it's still sore today. Not a good sign since it's been a week and a half since the fall. I managed to ski on it Monday, but I'm not sure if that was a good idea or not.... I may have to give in and see my orthopedist to be sure I didn't screw it up.

Greg, I can see from the vid what you meant about lifting my uphill foot.

Yep. This is something you can definitely work on while skiing the flats. Try just slightly unweighting your uphill ski, not fully lifting it. Also work on smoothing out your transitions from one turn to the other. As you are about to finish one turn you should already be thinking about initiating your next.

I'll try it on Thursday.
