Area skied: Ski Sundown, C.T
Date skied: March 1st from 3:00 - 5:30pm
Surface condtions: Spring conditions
I had a family ski afternoon today with my brother and my son which comprises most of our skiing family. We started out skiing at 3:00pm with Sundown as deserted as I have ever seen it with maybe 50 people tops on the whole mountain.
Our first run was down Canyon and the snow was firm except for the Exhibition which had sloppy spring snow. Next up was Nor'Easter which had firmer moguls than two days ago with less loose snow in the troughs in fact a patroller took a fall near the bottom of the trail.
Next up was Gunbarrel and we skied up to a well traveled path into the forest near the top of the trail. My brother skied right down the path once I told him this is where I thought the Glade that I had heard about was located. Warren and I skied down Gunbarrel which was it's normal semi icy self and waited for my brother to emerge at the Sunnyside Learning Area. He told me that the glade was very thin on cover and some turns revealed leaves and or rocks undeneath the snow. After convincing him to take me down it again to take pictures of the glade we left Warren to ski alone and proceeded back to the glade.
The skiing in the woods was okay and we skied on torwards skiers left until we encountered an old stone wall, at which point we skied a bit until coming to a cliff with a good 4-6' drop that we skied around. Snow cover was adequate if you did not dig your turns in very hard and at one point the trees opened up a bit:
We continued on until we reached a traverse that took us to the bottom of Gunbarrel:
So now I can say that I skied a Southern New England glade.
