Trip Report:
First off I would like to say that Sundown is a cool little mountain. The 3 runs I took before the race were fun, on some pretty nice trails. I did not do the bumps, but the were pretty impressive looking for the size of mountain they have.
The race was set up on their park run, and for the most part was real cool.
Sadly I got hurt pretty bad. One of the banked turns launched me pretty hard in practice. I hurt my left shin, and tweaked my knee a little bit on the fall. After resting on the side I continued my practice run. I felt good enough to continue on after the run, just take it easy.
I got up to the start house and waited my turn to go. I was in a heat of 3, as 1 person never showed up. My left leg was throbing, but it wasn't affecting my skiing. The knee was sore but good.
So I was in the starters gate. When the gate dropped i got a strong whole shot out to the lead. Pumped the 3 rollers real nice, and had the lead going for the first turn. When I put my skis on edge to turn my right knee just gave out on me slammig me down. I slowly kicked off of my skis and stood up with my legs in alot of pain. I put the skis back on and skied the rest of the way down going around the gates, but real slow, and no trust of my knee. Upon getting to the bottom I was told that one of the other racers in the heat DQ'd as he missed a gate, and I advanced to the next round.
Unfortunetly I had to withdraw as my knee kept trying to give out on me..... Luckily my parents had driven up to watch the race, so they were able to drive me home.
All in all in was a cool contest, and fun(except the injuries). There were only two things I did not like about it. The turn i got hurt on, had a very large roller going into the turn, which caused me to get airborne and slam into the turn.
The main jump on the course was a awesome 30-40 foot step up jump! I loved this jump! With the right amount of speed you sailed over the step up and landed it effortlessly. Most of the other people really did not like it and I planned to make up alot of time on it, as I had no problem hitting it full tuck. However right after the landing(30 ft.) there was a HUGE roller. If you hit the step up with enough speed to clear it properly you had way too much speed for this roller, and sailed way over the landing to flats.(In practice I cleared the step up with ease only to eat it hard on the roller.)
It was fun, and I may return for later races if I have healed properly. I just hope they smooth out the banked turns, and do something about the final roller.
I was hoping that JohnyPoach would come up and say hello. I had posted up what I would be wearing, and Greg had said he would be there. I kinda felt like a weirdo, asking people if they were JohnyPoach, so we never met. Did you race, and if so how did you do?
