When you consider the guy was from Kentucky, where there’s no mountain and few ice, what does he know? Where can he get the knowledge there’s ice up high when it’s all grass on the parking lot?

I‘ve told this story to many people. I was in Michigan and an SUV with an Arizona plate had tried to drive on the snowmobile trail and got stuck! He’s never seen a snowmobile trail!

OK, so these guys aren’t very bright. But there’s really such a thing that they don’t know what they don’t know. :(
There is a thing called the internet now a days with information. If you don't have a clue then you (the guy from Kentucky) are the idiot. I wouldn't go to South America and just walk out into the jungle or into the everglades or the desert without doing research first.

How old was the guy? Maybe he’s not of the “internet age”?

Would you go dip into the water on the beach at Hawaii? There’re sharks there!

How about rent a mountain bike and zip around a neighborhood park in Orange County of California? Are you aware there’re mountain lions that occasionally come near housing developments? (A guy got eaten by a mountain lion a few years back. All the locals know about it, but few visitors do. You’d better do an internet search before going for a stroll) Or, how about a bear bell?

It isn’t just the jungle of South America that have man eating wild animals! The guy from Kentucky wasn’t hiking at the arctic circle. He’s just hiking in New Hampshire…

lol wtf is 'not of internet age?' he's either 6 or 85?

climbing mount washington isnt light leisure activity one would/should do without ample preparation. its not remotely comparable to swimming in the ocean in hawaii or road biking in california.

you are so tedious.
You haven’t been around enough.

Outside of the northeast, no one heard of Mt Washington. Nor the tales of all the misadventure. It’s no more extreme than riding a bike in a neighborhood park in California!

Are you saying he didn't see any snow or ice before he fell? They have ice in Kentucky and he was wearing sneakers!

For any that have done this...you know how easy a fall like this can happen...or any number of things...
Andy Z and I finished with a whole list of wrong doings...

I'm from New England and have never as much as seen a desert in my lifetime, nevermind spent time there. I am certain that I'd do a healthy amount of research before even contemplating a hike there. I wouldn't just show up in my sneakers and go for it.

He's 23. He didn't need to do any internet research. All he had to do was look up and see the snow. And then if he looks down, sees his sneakers and thinks that's good enough, well, it's on him.

"Just hiking in New Hampshire"?? Here's some light reading about "just hiking in New Hampshire", specifically Mount Washington.

Kentuckys highest peak is about the same height as Killington which is the second highest peak in Vermont. There are mountains in Kentucky.

One of my favorite things about the AMC visitor centers in Pinkham and Franconia notches is how the book sections of their gift shops are full of works on a theme: People Die Here/These Mountains Relentlessly Kill People, Even If They're Experienced Mountaineers. I've just gotta respect the realness.

Was the girl that died wearing a helmet, crampons and an ice axe? I’m sure that will all come out in an official report.

It sounds like one other major injury that day involved someone else in her party and it took well into the evening to get them out.

So you know California is a dessert then?
