Going into local music / concert / festival season I'd like to see this thread carry on. Best show? Worst show? Show you missed? Best sound check you've heard? Sound check you messed up for someone? Other tales...

Right on! I titled this skiing and music, but its pretty clear that people here are generally interested in talking about music too!

It'll give us something to talk in the summer too, instead of the ususal bickering until the snow returns

OK Best sound check was back in the summer of 1773 at Watkins Glen in upstate NY. It was Friday night and there was a festival the next day: The Band, The Alman Brothers and the Grateful Dead. So we're sitting around the campsite and we heard music from the stage area. Head over the Dead were playing and the crowd was gathering. They played a 2 hour soundcheck!

The Band blew me away the next day. I had no idea how good they were. Only time I ever got to see them though.

the good old revolutionary war dead :ROFLMAO:

as a person in his 30s who only got into the dead when jerry died, i cannot fathom having been a young person who stumbled upon watkins glen 1973 and then decided to never see the grateful dead again. wild.

edit - i think i misread you. you saw The Band once. i hope you saw the Dead more than once! i love love love the band. doesn't get much more Americana than Canadian songwriter levon helm

I didn't get into the Dead until Phish went on hiatus in 2000. in 1995 I was full on into Grunge, Alternative and Thrash metal. I saw Phish for the first time 10/18/96 and my expectation of live shows was forever changed from that point forward!

I'm still very particular about the era and song selection in my Grateful Dead Shows. There are some super awesome shows and a lot of MEH shows. Especially after '77. '72 - '77 they were a force to be reckoned with.

Just bought Allman Brother's Band live at Filmor East on Vinyl. Damn those long songs on that album are 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

bite your damn tongue. brent mydland is god and the 80s are some of the very best dead around. i think this may be a controversial opinion. i am a brent guy through and through tho. best keys player the dead ever had. some will say keith and there's an argument for that. but people who say pigpen are just wrong. pig wasn't a good keyboard player, and i don't think he was a compelling singer or frontman. he was a slurring drunk. his death allowed garcia to emerge as leader and the dead to become what they became.

touché I do like the Brent era. the first GF I ever had (on cassette in the late 90s) was Live without a Net. That is a stellar collection of live songs, that I still regularly listen to today.

Keith was ok, at times I liked his piano only live approach but other time I think some organ would've been nice. Keith brought Donna, which might skew my opinion :ROFLMAO:

I agree on Pigpen.

brent also sang awesome harmonies and backing vocals. that gravel. that growl. i always LOVE his verse in the weight.

and, perhaps an even more controversial opinion, brent's songwriting chops were awesome. the songs do sound a bit preserved in the amber of the 80s and of their time, but i fucking love just a little light, we can run, blow away, easy to love you, etc.

the biscuits teased blow away for like 2-3 minutes at the cap a few weeks ago

brent's death was such a tragedy

yes Brent's Death is what set Jerry into his final spiral so I've read.

After resisting for many years I'm seeing DEAD and SLOW (CO.) this summer. while I think John Mayer has done a great job of carrying the torch and generally the music is good. BUT god damn is it so SLOW. like a 45 record played at 33 slow...

just take acid. that worked wonders for me last june. i had such a blast seeing dead and co. i go once a year just because. and something about it last year really clicked for me. and I'm gonna say it was the excellent lsd.

i am certainly going to the second night of citi field, as this seems like it may legitimately be my last chance to hear grateful dead music in a true giant stadium context.

i don't think any project after dead and co will fill stadiums. tho i am very interested in the band i hope john and oteil have up their sleeves for after this.

I'm a big mayer jerry fan. i think he really embraced the culture and as you said carried the torch. his vocals are fuckin sultry and i am not sorry that john althea and john sugaree makes me wet. stupid sexy jerry.

agree on Mayer. I was excited, although perplexed, when he was announced. I knew he had serious guitar chops and could sing. Never did I realize he could be a key part of a new "era".

I've watched a few streams, and listened to a few shows. But the reality is I can just listen the actual grateful dead when I'm feeling that.

noted on the approach for the show 🤪😎

i've wanted to combine dead spac with a day at the ponies but haven't made it happen. this year spac is before racing season.

we did go to the races two summers ago without a spac show attached. i went full hunter thompson with the lsd and wild turkey. and its BYO! it was a great day. even made a few bucks. AND you are allowed to smoke wherever you can see the sky at saratoga race track. and because in new york you can smoke cannabis where you can smoke cigarettes, it was a fantastic day lol

We're going to see GnR this Labor Day weekend at Saratoga. I don't really have any expectations for the show as I'm not the biggest Roses fan. Maybe I'll bring Saturdays PPs and cap during the set.

Yes I saw the Dead probably 12 - 16 times with Jerry. First show was 1970 at The Capitol Theatre in PoCho, NY. I was 13. Last I saw with Jerry was 1989 at MSG. I've probably seen more post Jerry shows when you take into account Kingfish, Further, Dead and Co and Phil and Friends. Plus we sometimes go to DSO or JRAD if they are playing the Cap.

Re. John Mayer, he was much better than I thought the first time I saw Dead and Co. I just can't take their slowdownedness. Jeff Chimente is, IMO the best keyboard player to ever play with any version of Dead.

We are going to the second weekend of Jazzfest in New Orleans in a few weeks. Dead and Co. are one of the headliners.
