Saw a folder in the gallery named this. What is it? Is there free lift tickets involved? Why didnt we have it last year? Are we having it this year?

I'm assuming you mean the one from March 2004? There were tickets involved in that one. If you notice there wasn't much interest so I imagine thats why it hasn't been tried again. Maybe if enough people show interest Greg will consider running the contest again...

As usual, Brian is the master thread finder. I added a poll to your post Austin. If there's enough interest, I'll run it again this year.

Would we have to sign over rights to the images to enter them, or would we only be releasing them for the contest?

(I'd be fairly likely to submit in the latter case and not particularly likely to submit in the former.)

What  Are you like a pro photog or something? If you are you shouldnt be able to enter because thats just cheap. Also if you are I wanna see some pics :D
Maybe a rule you cant enter if you ever have taken photography classes before, because anyone with experiance would probably give us wannabes no chance.

Does that mean that I'm disqualified because I took a photography class in the eight grade like 14 years ago?

Ah shucks, it wasn't that hard to find. ;) It was before my time here though, so that has to count for something. Although, IIRC, I ended up skiing on those tickets anyway since the winner couldn't use them and my wife was the only other entry... ;)

I voted that I would enter a pic, even if Moderators aren't allowed to win... ;)

No I guess not, but I mean people who have taken them recently and actaully know what they are doing with photography. I'm not sure what to do, but I just saying that it would be pretty cheap for someone with a lot photography skills to enter because they would pretty much easily win. Maybe anyone who has taken a serious class in the last 10 years. :-? I dunno, just an idea.

Disagreed. If someone has put in the time and effort to learn how to take truly great pictures, then they should be rewarded for their efforts. There's no way to police this anyway. Additionally, this will bring the quality of the entries up a bit. Don't worry Austin, you'll be a contender with some of the pics you've taken, I'm sure... ;)

Maybe a rule you cant enter if you ever have taken photography classes before, because anyone with experiance would probably give us wannabes no chance.

There are a reasonably high number of photo contests out there that exist to try and get rights to images for next to nothing--the general idea is that you offer a decent grand prize ($500 or a pair of skis or something like that), gather in a few thousand images, and end up with at least 10-20 that are actually usable for marketing purposes and for which you've gotten blanket releases. It's also not unusual for the entry rules to require that the photographer certify that all "models" have signed releases for use of their likenesses in advertising. I'd be quite surprised if that was the intent here, but for that reason I'd be exceedingly leery of sigining over redistribution rights on any of my images for a contest.

And no, I am not a professional photographer. Every time I think I took some good shots, I just go to a board where working photographers hang out, post and ask for comments and criticism...and watch them get ripped to shreds. I have taken a photo class, but that was in high school. The freeskiing shots I've taken so far have generally dekcus, by real photo standards, and I have the problem of deciding between taking a camera bag and trying to shoot or leaving the camera in my room and trying to rip when I go skiing. The latter has been winning, for the most part, although that may change a bit if I have the opportunity to go out with good weather.

Well, the entries would be limited to the Northeast...

And I have no intent of redistributing photos. If there's one I'd like to use for something, I'll do so only after the owner's permission and the fact that it was used in a contest is not permission in my mind...

I think North East would be cool but that is not up to me. But I do think it should start now and end later in teh season. I have set-up photo contest on www.pingertalk.com 2 or 3 of them actually and they got anout 20 submissions each.
Another key point is that a user can change their entries before a certain date. Incase they get another shot that they actually like better.

Ever though of themes like:
Lost Ski Areas
Glades
Moguls
View
etc...
