Skiing Torture

Today I had a terrible amount of torture. I work for the ski shop that owns the shop at Jiminey Peak. My boss asked me to take a trip up there and do a delivery to the shop. He told me to bring my boots and take a few runs while I was up there. This is great drive up on their gas and get to ski.:snow:
Unfortunetly the store was super busy so they asked me to work for a bit till it died down, then I could go ski. It didnt die down for a long time, and then I had to leave to get the company vehicle back to the store. I was 200 yrds from the lifts, the day after they had 5 inches of fresh, and couldnt ski.

Talk about a tease.....

Talk about torture- We finally get 6 inches of nice fresh snow, on Friday night even, and my back is so f@#$&d up that I can't even move without agony. My wife and daughter come home and tell me that they didn't groom a lot of the trails and there was some soft moguls forming on most of them!!! AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!

You think that's bad. Try running the lift during a snow storm. It's mostly standing there watching empty chairs go up mixed in with the occasional customer who braved the snow to be there. Talk about torture. One time I was jonsing so bad while running the bunny lift chair that I took a shovel half way up the bunny hill and rode it down while someone else was watching the chair for me. The only problem was there was too much pow to get going!!

Though it didn't work out for you, remember your boss was trying to do you a favor. Its the thought that counts.

its the oldest Catch 22, you love skiing so you think being in the ski industry will allow you to ski more, or those in the golf industry who never get to play.....bottom line, if you want to ski, dont work in the biz......

That's definitely true in some cases, but not all. For me, by working part-time at the mountain I'm able to ski a lot more than I would otherwise due to the pass I get for working there. I just know that I may not be able to ski on days that I'm scheduled to work...

I can see what you mean, that's why I specified that I was indeed part-time. I agree that there is a big difference between PT and FT, but I do still technically work in the ski industry. ;) That's why I threw my two cents in.. I don't think I'd ever want to work FT in the ski industry, those guys don't seem to get out much for sure. I need to find a gig as a FT professional conditions checker, that would be pretty sweet. :)

EDIT: BTW, no offense taken...

Some of us do more than others. A lot depends on your own priorities and finding a position where you can make it happen, whether by working nights and skiing before your shift starts or by getting a few runs in after your shift. You also need to realize that yes, you might miss some rather excellent conditions because you need to work during a powder day (which can be an incentive to work harder when the forecast is promising so you can be on the hill to, er, test the product). On the other hand, you might also find that you happen to be around on a Monday morning when there are zero guests in sight and the dusting reported by marketing is actually 6" of fresh with more falling at 1"/hr.

Now, if you can manage to live close to the hill (or on the hill if you're really lucky), that shorter commute time might also lead to a few more runs, and it feels less like going into work on your day off* if you don't have to drive so far. But overall, there are ways to make it work and get plenty of ski time while also putting in plenty of hours--just don't expect to get rich in the process.

(*: if you get a day off, of course.)

I finished teaching at 9:00 pm that night

It was a good night to stay for a few extra runs. There was a lot of freshies on every trail. We hit the Foxes, North Glade and Whitetail. They were all swell.

When I left around 10:00 pm that night, Potter Bros was closed. You could've skied for another 30 minutes or so.

Of course, the high school clubs book out around 8:30, so there isn't much action other than skiing after that.

I should be able to if we don't get slammed.

I'll be teaching and my wife and kids will be there as well on Saturday.
