Date(s) Skied: 1/24/08
Resort or Ski Area: Smuggler's Notch
Conditions: Overcast, steady light snow, COLD, P,PP, some ice
Trip Report:
This comes a tad late, but thought I would post after reading ckofer's report, and also it being our first trip up to the area.
My extended version of this trip with all the details can be found in my newb blog
We too arrived later Thursday morning the 24th, around 1030. The reason you can find in the above link.
In an attempt to see how much info we could solict and do an extensive vibe check, we started over at the Morse base area. We found this to be a nicely organized and informative little area......provided you are staying in one of the slope side accomodations or are a timesharee.
There is no where to stash your street gear unless your renting. The girl at season passes was kind enough to hold my bag for a few runs.
As ckofer stated, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
But to be fair, and my wife is a beginner, it really is family friendly and nice place to be learning.
We grabbed our gear and headed to the Madonna base area which we found much more on the norm to other areas we have visited. My wife settled into a book and I headed out to M1 chair.
Riding up I quickly relaxed to the softly falling snow which seemed to thicken as we climbed. Having left my digital cam behind, I snapped the crappy pics you see here with a gift shop special. (I advise against a KODAK sport disposy, its crap).
The cover seemed to thicken dramatically and I enjoyed watching skiers pop out of the woods covered in powder, though alot of terrain did seem to be closed as ckofer stated.
I somehow failed to grab a pic of the tree adorned with various ladies undergarments and mardi gras beads.:-(
Reaching the top I skied Upper Chilcoot to Lower, most of which was packed powder, some ice scrapes, but soft stuff on the margins. I could imagine without freshy the conditions worsting as ckofer mentioned.
I hit many variations including Drifter and the like, but due to the slow lifts and late start, I never made it to Sterling, an area where my coworkers say is much more fun.
Even though the double chairs are slow, it's nice as you can get some relative mid week solitude without a high speed stuffing the trails with people.
I would definitely try this place again.
On the way home Friday we swung by Stowe to take some more pictures...
NOTES:
Thanks for the reference to the Sunset in Mo'Ville. It was indeed super clean, super affordable and 16 miles from the mountain. Just don't bump your head on the ceiling!
