Bell to bell day. Temp 24 raising to to ~ 34 during day. We were in spring skiing gear and it was still pretty hot. They definitely got more snow than Stowe, having skied there the day before. But the strength of Stowe's snow making will help them survive. Stowe is doing 24X7 snowmaking. No overnight snow making. No snow-bas terrain park features except for the fixed rails. Snow began as PP, but transformed itself into very firm mashed potatoes. No boilerplate, unlike Stowe the day before. No death cookies, but a 96 underfoot sure beat a 77 under foot.
One trail had 12-15 whales which were a lot of fun, being about 10 to 15 feet in height. It does not appear they are to be knocked down.
1" in AM, brightened up mid morning, then clouds rolled in. Light rain for an hour 1-2. Started as snow on top, but after about 2 runs is was raining everywhere.
Crowds were healthy, but most lines never lasted more than 10 mins.
Trail conditions. It was like old times, on just about everything except for a couple blue groomers from the top. Blues skied like blacks. Signs specifically called out "experts only". Most of the blues were closed. The best ones were all natural, no grooming,. no snow making. Except for the groomers, many blues and and all of the blacks had water bars, some of which were simply impossible to zoom over. Lots of rocks protruding, grass was pretty rampant across trails.. This kept away the timid, but fools that we are, we went for it and just enjoyed ourselves. Watch out for the gravel and mud and mini-waterfalls.
It began to firm up by about 3pm, which was par for the course. it will need a lot of grooming, if they can do it without tearing into the earth.
We had a lot of fun since these are the kind of conditions we all grew up with. You had to be on your toes all the time. However, many skiers would dislike this this of course. I am definitely skiing a lot better, after the weigth loss and the boot fitting. I have 100% control. Finally.
I had honor of meeting AZ's own highly-regarded vandi518 and outstanding posse. Trying to synch was a comedy of errors. Anyways, highly regarded if you're looking to ski at Smuggs
Looking at Burke for later this week. Would like to hear some beta on Burke.
