2008.09 Demographics/Participation

  • 1 in 14 of Americans consider themselves to be skiers or riders
  • 14.8 million Americans participated in a snow sport in 2008
  • The average snow sports participant is about 30 years old, has a college degree and household income exceeding $100,000 annually
  • 1 in 5 female snowboarders are over 35 years old and plenty of girls are in the pipeline
  • The snow sports demographic experienced a doubling in unemployment rate during the 2008.09 season as the economy tanked
(but now have more on-slope time ;) It will be interesting how resorts will respond.

Those statistics aren't particularly meaningful. The unemployment rate doubled last year when the economy tanked. Why should it be surprising that the unemployment rate among skiers & snowboarders also doubled?

I seem to be in a cycle where I work a good contract then get laid off in fall and rehired in the new year... I'm down with it...

I think Geoff saw the good side everyday he walked out his door last season.

Indeed. It was fun collecting unemployment and skiing every day. I've structured my life so I can still ski every day but it's more like 9 to 10:30. I'll be riding the high speed lifts midweek instead of the Snowdon quad.

This must be the mean. It would be interested to see the Median and the Mode. As a 31 year old skier, taken my age group as a rough percentage of all general age groups, I usually feel in the minority at almost all ski areas.

That's an interesting stat. Although, I usually feel somewhat "young" compared to most adults at the mountain. Maybe it's where I'm skiing.

Last year I really thought I was going to be part of this statistic. I'm really glad I didn't.

Funny, your place of work just came in as number one of the 100 best companies to work for in Mass.

Overall (and this could depend on what your job function is) I think it's a pretty good place to work.

Good benefits, matching 401k, time off, telecommuting, some of us have flexible hours (any 60 you want ;)), I'd love to work up with the team up there. Someday...

Steve, the median is about 42 years according to some 2006 data I have. Agreed, a much more interesting number.

Jeez, hadn't thought about this...hope those with passes choose to skip Sugarloaf Wednesdays...state locals ski for $30. Kudos to Boyne for keeping this...
My gut tells me that's not the case though. My amateur observation is that season pass sales were already committed last year. This year it's more discretionary, and it will drop.

I don't hear any resorts squawking about pass sales being up this year. Last year, passes were committed to before the economy tanked. I also know quite a few more laid off people, who have been on the street for a long time, burning up their savings. People that are employed are working longer hours to preserve their worth to the company, to battle for every sale. (It was only businesses like GSS that are near recession-proof). No raises, expenses continuing to rise. Boomers with kids in college are being squeezed, something has to give. Interesting to see a lot more of these pre-purchase tickets, kind of a middle ground between a full season pass and a day ticket.

Plus, going skiing costs more than just buying a ticket or pass. IMHO, I suspect it's not going to be a good financial year this season, but what do I know???

I left out the Saddleback Men's $35 Wednesdays.. It's always like this...they never give anyone a couple days of inexpensive skiing...just a mad battle for one day...oh well... IMHO they'd probably do more business scheduling them on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. A 2-day midweek venture, rather than a single day battle over mountains, for anyone with the long instate haul seems like the more viable option.
