As suggested before, demo!
If you are looking to buy a pair eventually, demo a variety of skis. There is no such thing as the perfect ski unfortunately because some are simply better for different conditions. You'd eventually want a pair that closely matches the kind of skiing you would want to do the most. Perhaps an All-Mountain twin-tip if you want a little of everything.
Demo from a ski shop though. I can't imagine that most resorts are going to have rental skis that you'd eventually want to buy....maybe I'm wrong there.

jaywbigred,

i crossed over from skiing to boarding recently. before crossing over, i tried 1 day of boarding about 12 years ago, then the kids came and .... anyway, the point is, if you tried it before it should be easier. that's my experience. i now have 4 days of boarding under my belt and i am able to carve, make short turns and do some spinning around.

i am not sure if this is a slow or a quick development, but as i figure out my zone, i find myself applying some of my skiing concepts while boarding. for example, lean forward to gain control. it is so much easier to connect the turns when you are leaning forward. hear is another, look ahead and focus on the fall line. it is so much easier to react to the terrain changes when you do this; this is especially true if you are a bump skiier. and here is the one i like. finish your turn and feel your edges.

it's been fun, but i would never give up skiing. i actually picked up boarding so that i can go freestyle. what's life without skiing????

Go short on the skis. A guy who works for me hated his attempts at skiing until I took him night skiing: he used my blades. Immediate success. The hardest thing about learning is keeping them from crossing. Being athletic helps.
