Is it still in operation? Just checked the K-Mart website and for lifts it was in shadow text instead of bold on the main lift list for the interactive map. Was a fun ride.

I rode it on Thanksgiving weekend and it looked like it was there to stay for a long time to come. It's fun to do laps on Upper Bunny Buster with that lift. In 1994 the May 1st slalom was held on that trail with the poma lift.

I remember rides on the Giant Killer poma that serviced the summit area at Pico, that was one steep liftline.

I've never been to Pico. Whenever I made day trips to Killington it seemed like it would be such a waste to drive that much and go to PIco and not it's bigger next door neighbor. I figure that if I frequented the area more often it would make sense to give Pico a chance.

What I can't imagine is that a while back they had t-bars / surface lifts that lasted so long. Like at Jay the Jet Triple was once a T-bar. I can't imagine a t-bar that is that long! And while I think that a diamond rating for the Jet might be overstating its difficulty (especially groomed), it would be by far the steepest t-bar I would have ever been on had I gone on it. How does the Pico one compare to that?

It's the only Poma I've been on in the last 20 years. Keep it going! Surface lifts rule!

I'm with Riv here. 'Loaf is one of my favorite large resorts in the NE. It really has a lot of soul left, despite ASC ownership. (I do miss the sign on the spillway chair, tower 3 or 4, I think: "If you were at Sunday River, you'd be at the top by now!") It is a real pleasure to ski, with variety, challenge and a very unique mountain.

Saddleback is a true hidden gem. It is very much an old school mountain, which suites me fine. Great challenge, gorgous scenery and trails/glades, very low skier density. Hit it the day after the storm and still have fresh like you likely wouldn't have gotten day of the storm at 'Loaf.

I love 'Loaf, however, ski Nightmare and Muleskinner and you'll understand. (If that doesn't work, try Dark Wizard).

That sign always made me laugh, it was such a slap in the face to Sunday River. The staff at Saddleback is amazingly friendly and a 100% about face from the management at Sugarloaf.

I think that sign was on the long part of Double Runner, near the top???

I adore Sugarloaf, it is my favorite ski area in the east and one beautiful mountain:

understandable regarding sugarloaf. but if it is a powder day, you'd find WAY more untracked at saddleback whereas loaf will be tracked out in an hour. same with burke vs. jay. etc. you seem to like MRG, so i can highly recommend the lesser known alternatives like burke and saddleback.

Thanks for the tips, I'm sure what you are saying is true. I also have to work on getting out more than a dozen or so days a year. Then I can have more of a chance to experiment with new areas.

oops, summit i meant. a freaky looking yan that was retrofitted. yans are just freaky.

I think that those chairs have been since replaced by Poma carriers because of the defective grips. Not sure. I recall when I skied at Pico and Killington in 2001, both this lift and the Superstar were using the original chairs. Sunday River was as well. I know that Superstar and Sunday River had their quads retrofitted.

Now that you point it out, Pico in 1998 or so had the Summit Quad Towers lowered due to wind. They have not repainted those towers IIRC and them, along with the rest of the infrastructure at Pico was pretty shoddy. Too bad. I am a broken record on that point. This is turning out to be a good thread on Killington and Pico. Got some questions, re: Pico for Killington's Challenge as well.

I have alot of questions for ASC regarding Sugarloaf, Pico and Killington, but to be quite honest, I do not expect any answers of substance from a company more interested in getting my season pass money in May, than providing anything worthwhile during the ski season.

Sorry to offend anyone with that comment, but that's the way I see things.
