I have read that in much of China, this is the common toilet you will find.
You'll also have to be very lucky to find any toilet paper in China (or napkins for that matter). I recommend carrying around a pocket full of tissues.

You would think it a common evolutionary human trait across all cultures to want to eliminate the potential for taking a dump on one's own feet.
I've heard that they think the squat is more conducive to clearing oneself out, as opposed to sitting.
I don't know about that though...
Been 15 years since I've been to China but when I went there the toilet was pretty much a hole in a concrete floor (like a drain in a gym shower). The nicer hotels at least gave you a bidet (sp?). It took some getting used to that's for sure.
If you think that's bad, check this out... Blog from a Canadian-Australian guy working on setting up snowboarding venues at the Sochi Olympics. This Olympics is going to be a mess.

A double hopper is looking better than this setup.
Up until 2 or 3 years ago MRG still had the trough style urinals. Not exactly fun to whip it out after you just came inside on a cold day.
If any place could get away with that it was MRG. It adds to the character

What's so hard to understand?I'm guessing people in SW Asia don't like to put their ass where another persons ass has been? I don't know, I never understood it.

Have you never been to a gas station bathroom where someone had left some sh!t mark ON the toilet but didn't bother to clean it up? Do you seriously say you want to sit down on it???
