Wasn't planning on skiing Monday as the weather looked bad....but....woke up to blue skies and warm temps. Still wasn't going to go but the wife would have none of it, me bitching all day that is. So she dropped me off there. It was raining but not too bad. Hopped on the Gondi and took a spin down excelsior, nice!! Spring conditions. Got to the bottom and it stopped raining. Called HPD and met him at the top. Took a spin down Upper Cloudspin. The sign at the summit lift said "true experts only" great we said, now every yahoo around will be up there. We found spring bumps,a little grabby, which created some nice yardsales by the "true experts" up there.
We pretty much skied around the whole place. It was like a late March day. Good bumps on Makenzie and fast groomers everywhere. He had to do some work at around 12:00 so we split up. Spent another hour exploring, hitting the bumps...then I found upper Makenzie. Damn! monster bumps, ridges, and a mini headwall with a 8 foot plummet. Got the heart racing for sure.
Met up with HPD again, cruised around, guy is FAST. Last run of the day, what to do? The top was completely socked in, ZERO vis. Guess we have to go up there. Met one other guy up there, staring down the abyss that was Skyward, couldn't see a thing...perfect, lets go. Skied blind down the whole thing, kept the trees on my right for a refrence. The run is like Westway at Hunter, big steep straight shot down. made it down, skied Northway? helped out a few yardsalers, to the bottom and called it a day. Oh, the place was pretty empty, about 1/4 of Sundays crowds. Even got a gondi to my self once.
All in all a great 2 days. Monday being the best of course. The snow set up perfect as the day went on as it got colder. Couldn't ask for more.
P.S. I hear they may open an airport in Plattsburg....$50.00 round trip out of JFK. Wonder where I'll be spending some time next year?
