I like them, pretty laid back folks. Not the pushy NYC crowd you get at Hunta. "Yo lady, you and dat kid goin get outdaway or not. Yo Joey, get a picture of me goin off dis jump." AHHHHHHHH

Nope! Not gonna get into it about the relative merits of Canadians and New Yorkers.

Must...fight...urge....Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Nope  !

Ah, come on Jimmy. We have to have some laughs here don't we.

You know, what I don't like about Smuggs is the way they treat the day-tripper. You have to park in this downhill lot and walk up a very slippery drop off driveway to get to the lodge.

Sounds like you've been parking in the wrong lot! Try parking lot 1, get dressed in it, then ski down. At the end of the day, simply ski to your car!

dave

You must not have a family. You could never get 3 girls a wife and and one old fart (me) to get geared up in the lot.

I'll forego the valet, the gormet burger and the cushy chair, but I'm not getting dressed in the lot. The only thing I ask for is a warm hut somewhere in which to dress, eat and unwind for a few minutes.

The exchange rate is in favor of the Canadian skiier?

When did that happen?

Of course it didn't happen. In fact, it's generally worse for them. That said, there are still plenty of ri$h Canucks in Montreal willing to pay the price. The other reason Montreallers pay the price is that Jay and Stowe are the closest real vertical.

Now, Jay, being the benevolent souls that they are, offer tickets "at par", upon proof of Canadian citizenship. They still have to pay US$4 for a soda, however. Stowe, unable to ferret up a magnanamous spirit, charges full US extortion, er, price for its' services.

Jay is owned by a canuck company that's why there do it plus it's the majority of their weekend market.

That week in March is something else....ay. The Bush has this one group from Toronto...ay, about 1000 people. They get a rate so low I always wonder if the Bush actually makes any money, ay.

doh! I didn't think about that. Good point! Nope, I don't have a family (yet), but my wife and I get suited up at home (used to live 5 minutes from Smuggs, now 2 minutes from Sugarbush), then put our boots, helmets, gloves, and jackets on in the parking lot. I totally understand now that I see the big picture!

I never understood people gearing up in the lot....

Drive up.

Drop everyone off

Drop off all the gear

Help carry the gear to the racks

Make base camp in the farthest reaches of the lodge

Go Park the car (or if your from Bean town, go pak the cah)

Walk back to the lodge

Get tickets

Make sure all the kids have used the restroom (why are the always in the basement) BEFORE they gear up

Gear up

Head to Lift

Done for the day

Gear down (Can't be shy changing in the lodge)

Grab a beer (or 12 if I'm local)

Let the lodge empty

Go get car and find a spot in the front row

Listen to Margaritaville for the thousandth time (and it's not "Livin on sponge cake")

Hope in car

Drive home

Listen to wife/kids sleep

Put on Some JT

About 1/2 hour out, call for pizza

Pick up said Pizza

Bring gear in (leave skis in coffin)

Make a Pitcher of Margarita's

Kick back, put on a movie (hopefully I'll get schooled an epoch soon)

Pass out

I gear up in the lot if I'm with other snowboarders or telemarkers... It's way more convinient for me..
But Alpine skiers seem to like booting up in the lodge..

At Hunter I put my snowboard or tele boots on at the house and drive over... Grab my board or skis from the locker and hit it...

a plan...

Hey Brett,
I like your style. I have discovered one method that seems to make everyone happy. This works if you are staying not too far from the mountain.

I, being the anxious soul that I am (to ski, that is) am usually up at 5AM, while the rest of my brood is dancing with sugarplums.

With all that extra time before the lifts start, I load up the ENTIRE family's gear, and drive right up to the lodge door, usually around 6 or 6:30 AM. Lodge of course is already open. I'm still in my civies, so lugging ain't hard, and the distance is quite short. All the skis go on the rack right next to the lift. Stake out a table, throw all their !@#$@ on and under it. There's usually a bunch of folk working, so I always seem to be able to get lift and lesson (if necessary) tix. There is no waiting for nothing!

I go back to the motel/condo/house/shack, eat a second breakfast and begin to 'rouse them about 7. If I get a lot of pushback (usually on the 2nd day), I just gear up, go back to the mountain and get about 2 hours of freshies in. Remember, I'm parked in the first row. They call me on the cell, I go back and get them (the sacrifices we make...). They feel good that I can drop them off at the door and park the car in row 111. Then again, I don't have to carry nuttin' at this point.

Maybe, just maybe they're on the slopes by 11. No Joke. This way, I'm not on my 2nd stroke waiting for the gang to do whatever it is that takes my family so long to get going....

Of course, we always reserve time for "big boys skiing" so I can get to the interesting terrain.

Compromise is a critical element to family skiing.

Now, if they would only put outhouses and burger shacks along the trailside, that would be perfect. :-?

It's a challenge, but I've on occassion been known to put my DH boots on and DRIVE to the mountain. I doubt that my gas-to-brake-pedal response time is very good, so I'm careful not to tailgate. I only perform this stunt when things get desparate (read: the lifts are already running and I'm not on them.;)

Only speaking for myself, Alpine gear gets heavy and trying to carry it all while wearing boots is difficult. Somehow dad always seems to end up carrying way more than his fair share.

I seem to have problems with dropping everything I own into the snow. I haven't even begun to speak about the rest of my family, all whom will have to use the bathroom at least twice before we go out. And, if you have little people, the slightest thing could set them off. I avoid parking lot meltdowns at all cost. Go figure.

Nope...I pack the night before...

Sandwiches and luches and everuthing....

Each kid has their own boot bag (12/9/7) and is responsible for their own stuff...

Since I WONT ski in NJ anymore, it's usually a run to the 'skills...

We WILL be geared up and ready to go when the lifts open...clothes are layed out the night before and we're on the road by 6:00/6:30

Ain't spending all that money to get on the slope at 11.

Man that Belleayre pass is looking really good....

Anyone ever look at skyauction?

Time to start a new thread...this is threadjacking to a new level...

I got pretty good at it...even managed to learn how to drive with a clutch and stick. You've gotta get used to the 2 available speeds: STOP and FAST.

The AT boots just make it way too easy now.
