On the drive up to the mountain this morning, Dave said he had a feeling we
were in for a surprise powder day...Being here yesterday and seeing this
morning's report, I wasn't so sure. Well, Dave got it right. 2" of new was
reported in this morning's snow report and that looked about right when we
rolled into the parking lot at a ripe 1045am. Then it started to snow. I
figured we might get some flurries but not the total nuking that followed
for a few hours; there was no wind and the flakes were huge so it stacked up
quickly.

Dylan D. joined us today. He's always smirking when Dave and I say its
better "to be employed" but not necessarily working, and just to be skiing.
That's why we find ourselves with only a handful of others on a rapidly
deepening Mt. Mansfield...the Wednesday after MLK weekend. But, Dylan
doesn't have it so bad when he can consistently take six-hour lunch breaks
from Montpelier.

Snow accumulation became really significant by about 2pm. It was a more
widespread 6-8" on the lower half with areas of 8-12" on the upper mountain.
It was really deep in the usual spots off the Chin Clip down towards RT 108.
Like Dylan said, maybe the Jay cloud got lost?

Everywhere we went, it was untracked and boot deep. We left three troughs.

And it was game on.

I even stepped out from behind the camera for a shot.

Last run of the day brought us to a favorite low angle stash. The light was
dark, snow was moving back in, but the powder was deep. Here's a shot of
Dave sifting through the snow down a loaded creek bed.

Not much more I can say except that I'll be back at Mansfield in the morning.
