Area skied: Stratton

Date skied: March 24, 2006 from 10:30am - 4:00pm

Weather: Sun through thin overcast in the morning/midday, thickening clouds with snow showers in the afternoon. Temps (approx) in the Mid 40s base and mid/upper 30s summit.

Surface conditions: Mostly spring corn/wet snow; a little PP/FG near the summit

Hi all. I decided to take advantage of the free skiing for CT residents at Stratton yesterday, and I'm very glad I did. I was concerned that the lack of sun would prevent the snow from softening up, but all but the very top of the mountain softened up nicely by about 11AM. At about 2:30, the snow showers started in earnest and the upper mountain started to refreeze, but the mid/lower mountain stayed soft all day.

Almost all my runs were on Bear Down, which was bumped up nicely. Really fantastic lines for a non seeded trail. I highly recommend the trail for anyone looking for nice spring bumps. It starts out with gently rolling bumps, and then gets steeper and gnarlier through the mid section. The lower part of the trail flattens out a bit, but the bumps are still sizable, so it's a great hero section. There is an outlet trail on the left about 3/4 of the way down the slop that takes you back to the Shooting Star lift. I kept lapping the run with this route. I'm guessing I skiied it 12-15 times before breaking for lunch at 2:30. If you don't take the outlet to the Shooting Star lift, you have to take a very long run out all the way down to the Sun Bowl base. I understand that some midweek days they don't run the Shooting Star lift, which would make it more complicated to lap Bear Down.

After lunch. at about 3:00, most of the upper moutain was starting to refreeze. Bear Down became a bit crunchy, but still fun. The groomed trails on the upper mountain were scratchy by this point, but based on the conditions on Bear Down midday, I'm guessing that they were also soft earlier. The lower moutain, especially the Sun Bowl trails, remained corn/mashed throughout the afternoon.

The mountain was slightly crowded for a Friday, but still no lift lines really. All told, an amazing spring mogul day. I'm thinking of trying out Okemo next week.

Best,
James

Great report. Looking forward to our visit tomorrow

So the glades WERE open?

I'm afraid I can't offer any information about the glades. My runs were almost all on Bear Down, with a couple of cruisers in Sun Bowl, and a last run down Slalom Glade (which was nicely bumped at the bottom).

Have fun!

Yesterday reaffirmed every reason that i can't stand skiing in So. VT. Stratton has little to no character. IMHO it is the true definition of McMountain. Every trail skis nearly the same. The only two runs that didn't bore me out of my mind were Bear Down and World Cup, both of which were bumped up. 4 Six person lifts - are you kidding me? That is absolutely obnoxious. The trails were crowded with people falling all over the place because the lift capacity is so ridiculously high. Also, there is no way that is a 12 person gondola. Next time I get a free ticket to Stratton, I'll be sure to give it away to someone on the board because you couldn't pay me to go there again.

In case you haven't noticed before I'm not in the same club as some of you where I have a good time as long as I'm on snow. I know Beano, Greg and many others are happy as long as they're skiing. I'm more of the school where I need a good day of skiing or I get annoyed.

 Wow. You must have skied a different place. We had a blast. No crowds, good snow, and I thought for a "Mega Resort" there was plenty of character on the runs. Spruce was narrow and reminiscent of the stuff at Burke. Some of the runs off of Ursa were nice as well.

The trails were not really that challenging--but I was entertained. I think you need to keep things in perspective. What were you expecting? Stowe? Jay? Lots of backcountry?

You do have to keep it in perspective its 30 min from Massachusetts. I like it for what it is. I don't want to ski it more than a few times a year but those few times I have a blast.

It's not necessarily that I expected more, but I still was pretty bored there. I knew it would be pretty flat and boring but that doesn't change the fact that I would have liked a steeper more challenging experience. The mountain just didn't do anything for me.

That's my take on the place too. I was also there on 3/24. Unless they leave a trail bumped up they all ski the same. I really enjoyed skiing Bear Down and WC because of the bumps, but the rest was generic white bread boring. We skied 2 glades which would have been fun if there was more snow.

I’ve never been there on a weekend, but it must be a zoo. With all those high speed 6 packs they have a lot of load capacity, but I have to believe it makes for very crowded trails.

I’d probably go back for free (big of me) just to mix things up, but I’d never pay to ski there

was at stratton on 3/25-3/26. more of the same that was written. it was an average new england ski weekend in my estimation.

weather was warm to just cool enough and comfortable. spring like conditions, sheets of skied off ice and hardpack at the top, slushy and soft at the bottom. stayed mostly above the Ursa Express except for end of day.

coverage was okay. the conditions changed as the day went along and depended on how high up in the moiuntain you were. on some trails at a certain time of the day, you got perfect corn snow. on sunday, it was actually snowing lightly when it could have easily been rain.

Get your turns in now. They are hanging by a thread and a bad downpour and stretch of warm weather will most likely finish their season.
