ey All,
I'm in from a great day skiing at Sugarbush. Last night I stayed at a cheap motel in Rutland and I woke up hella early. On the radar there were persistant bands over Sugarbush which made the decision a no-brainer. Much to my delight, the 630AM snow report, reported 16 inches of new snow...and it was still dumping. The drive up scenic 100North was a slow one but I managed to pull into the 2nd row of the parking lot at 730AM. It was 16 degrees and puking snow..probably 1/2 inch while I booted up. I bought my ticket and then headed over to the Sugar Bravo lift which is one of the only lifts at Sugarbush which opens at 8:00AM. There were a few dozen people in line at 7:45AM...I joined up with a few other singles and managed to push my way pretty far into the pack and secure about 12th civilian chair. Claybrook owners get to begin at 730AM but a few tracks from them hardly mattered. First run I jumped onto Birdland right under the lift..wow was it amazing lots of faceshots on the upper half..then lower I did feel a few moguls underfoot and hit a rock..oh well. Back to the Bravo chair and enjoying the fresh along springfling and into the woods near Twist..Back up the Bravo this time over to Castlerock via untracked Domino woods..it was 845AM and the line was starting to form for the 9AM opening..I freaking love staggered chairlift openings, it's a powder whores wetdream.
I was on about the 20th chair on Castlerock.,,they groomed Castlerock run and Middle-earth before the new snow. Patrollers coming down Liftline had serious over the head faceshots. I decided to head to Middle Earth where there was a trench on the flat section at the top..then 4-5 tracks and it was perfect...knee-thigh deep and I was choking on snow..one of my best runs ever. 1700 vert of freshness and halfway down I passed three skiers through a sea of cold smoke..yes the powder was freaking light....Champlain powder. There were over 200+ people in line for the Castlerock chair so I headed for the base up the Bravo chair..to the left of a tracked out deathspout into the woods untracked I popped out on lower Ripcord which was cutup powder..there was a huge line for the Heaven Gate triple so I went back to the base. There was a big line for the Gate House chair..up GateHouse..up North Lynx..down the run under the lift..cutup pow in the middle..some untracked on the sides. then Morning star and then Birch run which had the goods since it's an intermediate Paradise and some were complaining of too much snow..is there such a thing..
At around 1045AM the Slidebrook opened and I rode it over to Mount Ellen..it was colder and windier over there. I took the NorthRidge quad up and skied Looking good which had freshies on the sides..then had chili in the Glen Lodge which is old school. Then into the Encore glades which had like 3 tracks..then back up the Northridge quad and down Lower FIS which was skier packed powder with a few pockets of fresh Poe...Lower FIS is a great run with a long runout which had me sweating a bit from skating. I ended up on the terrain park lift, I took that up and the Green mountain quad was down so I took the terrain park lift again..then took Inverness up and cut back over to the Slidebrook via a traverse..my legs were pretty cooked by this point..then down a terrain park which had freshies on the side..back to my car. I quit around 140PM. I'll tally by vert later but I doubt it was much more than 20,000. The first 3 runs off Sugar Bravo followed by an Epic run down an untracked Middle Earth was such a steezy start to a mad steezy day. I just checked into my hotel at Stowe and apparently they only got 7 inches..oh well..there's 12-16 inches expected by tomorrow afternoon.. I freaking love skiing powder..woo hoo..hee haaa..hidey Ho!!!!!!
