Date(s) Skied: Wednesday 1/20/10

Resort or Ski Area: Sugarloaf

Conditions: Powder!!!

Trip Report:

It started snowing yesterday in the A.M. and the kids were talking about a snow day. I called shenanigans since finals were supposed to start and it didn't look like we were going to get more than a few inches.

4:45 a.m. I got the call that school was canceled. 5:30 I was in the car heading north.

When I got there, I found nobody there. No lines anywhere, no wind, and tons of fresh! It was surreal. I have never seen it that dead, especially on a powder day. There were fresh lines to be had until 2 when I had to call it quits.

Run of the day? Probably Upper Tote Road (binder from the top is still roped off...fail) -> Cinder Hoe under the lift -> Binder under the Timberline Lift -> Binder -> Upper Glancer -> Ram Pasture Glades. Visibility on Upper Tote was the suck but, the sides had boot deep snow all day.

Discovered a couple new runs as well. Boomauger off the King Pine lift was amazing. Again, I am not a bump skier but I had a great time there. The bumps were MASSIVE, soft, and unavoidable. I bet if I had been there first thing, it would have been even more enjoyable.

The pics aren't great but, something to look at:

Thanks! Yeah, I can't believe I had never skied it. Usually I opt to lap Widowmaker and Ram Down off king pine. (Haulback gets covered with people and Ripsaw is a little too rugged for me right now)

How were the bumps on skiers left on Haul Back - they looked huge on Monday morning, but we didn't get a chance to hit them as we took Ramdown, down and they had to go back to reality.

Nice pics around Timberline. Love all those mystery connecting trails at the top of the mountain.

The bumps were huge. Easily the biggest I have seen them this season. Mostly mid-trail before you can dip into the trees. A couple guys on Tele's were ripping them up. The worst part of that whole trail is the headwall at the end if you stay to skiers right. Damn scary stuff that gets slicked up within an hour or so.

What I am still curious about is why the top 2 trails from the timberline lift haven't had the ropes dropped yet. Upper Binder and Cinder hoe are still roped off and I don't think they have been opened yet this season. Curious. But, there is still a lot you can do up there

Cinder Hoe was good to go last weekend - not sure why the rope was up. Anyway - it should be open now. They opened up the backside today.
