CARRABASSETT VALLEY & NEWRY, Maine -- Two of the biggest ski resorts in the East have partnered with three of the smallest to create an innovative way to introduce new people to the sports of skiing and snowboarding. Sugarloaf and Sunday River, Maine's two largest destination ski resorts, have teamed up with Maine day resorts Lost Valley, Titcomb Mountain, and Camden Snow Bowl to offer the Maine Learn to Ski and Ride Card, which provides the opportunity to learn to ski or ride at a local day resort before graduating to the larger slopes of a destination resort.
The $89 Ski and Ride Card will be available for purchase at Lost Valley, Titcomb, or Camden Snow Bowl, and will provide three days of skiing and riding as follows:
"Our resorts want to take a leadership role in introducing people to the sports of skiing and snowboarding, and the Maine Learn to Ski and Ride Card does just that," said Brad Larsen, Sugarloaf Director of Sales and Marketing. "For someone who is new to skiing or riding, a major destination resort can be hugely intimidating. This program offers people the chance to learn the sport in a smaller, less intimidating environment before they move on to tackle the bigger slopes of Sugarloaf or Sunday River."
The Maine Learn to Ski and Ride Card eliminates many of the impediments to learning to ski or ride by packaging three days worth of equipment, lift tickets, and lessons into one affordable product. Skiers will spend their first day in a lesson and become accustomed to being on snow before venturing out on their own on the second day. By the third day they will be prepared to explore the slopes of Sugarloaf and Sunday River, two of the East's biggest destination resorts.
"The Maine Learn to Ski and Ride Card is another example of the cooperation the Maine ski industry has demonstrated between the larger destination resorts and the local community areas," said Greg Sweetser, Executive Director of the Ski Maine Association. "Maine has a high percentage of community areas and the cooperation between the mountains works to everyone's benefit. Any programs in Maine that focus on introducing new skiers to the sport can only bring good things to the entire ski and snowboard industry. This program is a great introduction, and we know that introduction is the key to our sport."
Sugarloaf and Sunday River have historically worked to support Maine's numerous community ski areas through shared equipment, staffing, and learn to ski programs including the annual Mt Jefferson Ski Day. The Maine Learn to Ski and Ride Card represents the next step in that cooperative relationship.
